Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

If there's something you can admire SD for, it's that they've always stuck to their roots. Unfortunately, their roots is literal nazism so it's not something admirable.

I'm not arguing that S, M, KD, L, and C aren't.

S is losing support because they're abandoning their core values and moving further right.

C was lead for years by that Ayn Rand fangirl.

M, KD, and L are all super happy to partner up with SD, so yeah.

There are no good parties among the main parliamentary ones. V and MP are the most humane, and at the very least work against nazism, but they have their own fucked up quirks.

I’m not arguing that S, M, KD, L, and C aren’t.

So in your view, They are all, also literal nazis then?

No good parties is highly subjective. Maybe no good parties for you. I don't think ANY party in parliament is working for/with nazism. And I'd argue that V and MP are far from the most humane. They are both responsible for holding Sweden back several decades technologically. And the fantastic irony with MP is that most of their suggestions to make Sweden greener, has actually done the exact opposite. Not very humane in my book.

No good parties is highly subjective.

Naturally. For the most part, it's all subjective.

They are both responsible for holding Sweden back several decades technologically.

I loathe MP's stance on nuclear energy. I hate that they willingly throw the environment under the bus in their pursuit of dismantling our nuclear power grid. It's bananas to me that they rather have gas power or rely on external non-renewables than have nuclear power.

I get that it's a foundational ideal of theirs, but it's idiotic and rooted in ignorant fearmongering and a denial of reality.

As for V, I dislike their core tenet of being anti the European Union. I think the EU is a fantastic coalition, and partaking in it, and actively working to improve it is a no-brainer.

Economically, I'm also pro moving to the Euro. I know we voted against it well over two decades ago, but at the time I wasn't able to vote and it's hardly fair that a vote that was cast so long ago should be binding today when the demographics are entirely different.

All the parties are cozying up to the idea of mass-surveillance, which is just a tiny skip away from full blown authoritarianism, and that's worrying. Sure, V and MP have been a little outspoken against it, but their politics have been in favour of it. E.g. signing off on police having mass surveillance tools but basically putting forth the caveat that "it shouldn't be abused plss" which is such a milquetoast weak-ass position it makes me want to hurl.

I genuinely don't care to comment on the right block. They align with SD, and SD is and always have been nazis. Back in the 201Xs they mellowed out their rhetoric a bit, to be more palatable, but their politics always betrayed their roots. The overton window has shifted since however, and most of the parties are today where SD portrayed themselves back then.

So no, there is no party I can wholeheartedly agree with. V and MP are the ones pushing the politics I most agree with, but they also have massive ugly blemishes in their ideas that are hard to stomach.

It was a pleasent exchange. I don't agree but i can fully understand why you think what you think.

And it's generally difficult to find a party to align with. Personally I'm in the M block but mostly because i loathe V and MP and think they get far too much to say in an S led government.

Though i suspect you already figured as much.
