The Oatmeal comic was still created as a reaction to an incredibly homophobic comment from an extreme right winger before he died.
So even though it's an alteration, it's still exactly how the comic was originally designed.

Having never met the dude but as an expert on webcomics i can authoritatively say no they are not.

SO I dug a bit and the original is from a comic called Literally where he pokes fun of the word literally being used as its own antonym instead of figuratively.
Specifically he mocks a quote from some dead bigot.
