The notion that the Nazis were competent is a retcon

[–] hessenjunge@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

Depends.

Not competent at:

  • running a successful economy
  • building a stable future
  • balancing the budget
  • etc

Competent at

  • spending other people’s money
  • ruining a state
  • building rockets
  • industrial scale murder
  • convincing idiots they’re competent on stuff they’re most incompetent
  • etc
[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Counterpoint: They were not that good at building rockets because they killed more people during production than were killed by the rockets.

[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

They were gonna kill those people anyway. You can't measure the success of a project if you don't understand the goals.

Capitalism in a nutshell.

[–] hessenjunge@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

You forgot they continued building rockets after WW2. 😊

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah but von Braun didn’t have slave labor building Apollo

[–] hessenjunge@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

That wasn’t the point. And don’t forget that the USSR also had some help getting Laika into space.

I also meant to convey the off-topic sub context that a lot of Nazi walked away Hans Landa Style but without scar. A lot of Nazis weren’t punished, Nixon was pardoned, etc. We should stop allowing clemency in these cases.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Agreed. Humans are and always have been terrible.

[–] Elting@piefed.social 51 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Yeah they were psychotic crackheads that ran their country into the ground too. Almost like there is some kind of through line with fascist thinking.

[–] jode@pawb.social 36 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Well, meth, but still

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Yeah, and they were grifters too.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It does feel like stupidity makes people buy into conservatism, and then fuck everything else up.

[–] Elting@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Its fear and anxiety that make them stupid.

[–] TheLowestStone@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Its the other way around. People are afraid of what they don't understand.

[–] Elting@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

Ignorance of a world with an ever changing social structure, drives fear and anxiety in those who don't understand that. That fear and anxiety can be exploited at large to get people to make irrational decisions that benefit only a few.

There are levels.

WWII Nazis are far more competent than today’s Nazis.

Like there is an order of magnitude in the difference

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Oh yeah, you have to be at least 10^4^ dumber to follow an ideology that lost so miserably

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Exactly, it constantly amazes me how we have all our history lessons and yet our idiots are extra idiotic.

It’s as if education had the opposite effect on a certain group.
