The artist literally upsold them for no other reason than money, and then bragged about gouging them over making it shiny. There was also something about him holding the statue until they paid in full, before delivering it. He knows what's up with these losers.

Give it a few months and the gold leaf is flaking off, and they start fixing it with spray paint. It's all so poetic.

To be fair, let's do some math: A tall human man has a volume of about 70 liters. Some searching online tells me that we would need 43480 ouncs to fill that volume with real 100% 24k gold and thus make a life-sized statue. At current market rate, such a statue would cost 173 Million € or 204 Million $

It would have been gold plated, not made entirely out of gold. Yet they didn't even bother with that.
