Hello everyone

Today, we’re introducing a new version of the profiles feature on Android devices, allowing you to easily connect to specific VPN presets depending on your needs.

Using connection profiles on Android will allow you to define:

  • The country/city /server you want to connect to
  • The connection type (Standard, Secure Core, P2P)
  • The VPN Protocol (OpenVPN, WireGuard, Stealth)
  • Enable/disable Secure Core, NetShield, DNS filtering, and define NAT type.

We’re also introducing an Android-exclusive (for now) feature, allowing you to auto-launch a website upon connection. Simply toggle the feature on and define the URL, which will be opened via your device’s default browser upon connection.

You can learn more about this feature and connection profiles on Android here.

Please note that these updates only apply to users on paid plans.

We’ll be back later today with more updates, but until then, stay safe.

Hi everyone,

After Apple made it possible to support VPNs on Apple TV, you’ve made it clear that you would like to see support for Proton VPN.

After announcing that it would be available this summer and publishing the source code in September, it took a bit of time to get through Apple’s review process, but we’re happy to share that it is now available!

With Apple TV and Proton VPN, you can now stream your favorite shows, films, and sporting events on your big-screen TV in full 4K from over 100 servers via your Apple TV, no matter where you are: protonvpn.com/download-appletv

Proton VPN is now available on tvOS!

See our streaming guide for more information: https://protonvpn.com/support/streaming-guide/

Proton VPN is now available across the Apple ecosystem on iOS, macOS, iPadOS, Apple Vision Pro, and tvOS. Let us know what you think!

Hi everyone,

We've heard your requests and are excited to announce that FIDO2 support is now live for all Proton mobile apps! This means you can use security keys like YubiKey to add a layer of phishing-resistant protection to your account. Here’s how to add a security key to your account using the web app:

https://proton.me/support/2fa-security-key

After adding security keys, you can use them to authenticate on mobile when signing into all Proton mobile apps.

Thank you to everyone who's been asking for this feature. We're always working to make Proton more secure and user-friendly, and your feedback is invaluable in helping us get there.

What's next?

Soon, we'll provide the option to disable the Authenticator App for those with registered security keys, so stay tuned!

Give it a try and let us know what you think!

This used to work but this weekend I noticed it was no longer working.

I subscribe to a streaming service outside my country, it's in south america. I used to turn on the VPN on my desktop (EndeavourOS), connect to a country in south america, do the same on the TV and I'd Chromecast the video. No problems, excelent quality, worked great.

This no longer works. When the TV is connected to ProtonVPN, it doesn't show in chromecast devices list. As soon as I disconnect it, it shows up.

Things I tried:

  • Updating the ProtonVPN app on both TV and desktop
  • Updating the TV firmware
  • Changed from Wireguard to OpenVPN
  • Enabled split tunneling on the TV and whitelisted chromecast
  • Connecting to the exact same server
  • Several countries
  • My android phone can find the TV but nothing happens when I select it
  • Toggled settings such as Moderate NAT, IPV6 and Port forwarding, nothing works.

Chromecasting works fine if I disconnect the VPN on the TV but I can't watch the streaming service. Any ideas? Thanks.

No rage, just confusion as I'm sure it's something I did wrong.

I try out Proton Pass (web browser) for the first time and generate an alias, and then a password. And I remember adding a couple of notes to it. But I opened it up the next day, and the alias is still there, but the other info is gone. Nothing in the history, nor in the generated passwords.Looks like it was last modified at its creation, so I would guess that it never saved the info.

Did I miss a button click or am I missing something?

I'm using Pop!_OS 20.04. Until now I've been using wireguard conf files that I set up manually with nmcli and that works fine, but I though I'd give the linux app a try, mainly to be able to quickly switch servers without needing to download a new conf file each time.

My issue is I have to set the wireguard connection MTU to 1400 on my network. With the default value of 1420, connections are always timing out and I can't get any site loaded on Firefox. Now, I can run ip link set from terminal and change it after the app creates the proton0 interface, and that's a workaround, but is there some way to change the MTU parameter for all connections?

Title. Is that possible? I have proton vpn setup at the network layer at home so there is no need for the app on my phone or laptop to be connected when at home. However I would like it to auto connect when I connect outside of my house. As anyone done this before? This would specifically be for android and windows devices if that matters.

Does anyone know if you can use Proton Calendar with the MacOS Calendar app?

I thought we could use the bridge for that. But it seems that bridge is only for mail.

I’m using Google Calendar for work and I’m trying to create one overview of both calendars. Was hoping MacOS Calendar app would be the solution.

I am not the author.

I found this blog to have both a short summary of the reasons as well as a pretty complete overview of the options for protecting against this specific threat model. I can just send this to people and they'll understand the why and the how.

I've decided to leave Proton after being a user since 2017. Today, I migrated all my services to my new domain, marking the end of my time with Proton. The recent political noise and price point were no longer justifiable for me. It was a good experience while it lasted. Thanks for the fishes 🐟 🐠

Please tell us that you're not moving away from Lemmy/Mbin too. There's a gigantic tonedeafness to asking your supporters to use centralized social media at this specific time that's hard to accept you're not realizing.

Instead of leaving Xitter, they left Mastodon. Proton's trend is not inspiring confidence and this feels like another step backwards.

Proton Drive has decided to duplicate about a thousand files on me. It has also decided to stop syncing properly. Not sure what the issue is but it's broken. I've restarted it, reinstalled it, restarted my computer (Mac). It keeps saying that it synced X minutes ago but it's very evident that there are files present on the web version that are not on my computer. There should be no reason for these files to be missing. And there's files my Finder says "this file doesn't exist" even though it does.

So, I'm in the process of (1) deleting the duplicates and (2) downloading all my files from Proton Drive on the web.

If I decide I still want to use Proton Drive after this disaster, what's the best way to remove the app and the directory from my computer in order to start over again - ideally by syncing the files from the web to my computer.

Currently moving my partner and I from Google to the Proton Duo plan.

Mail import and forwarding is great, the calendar is decent (we only miss the month overview widget on Android), the missing Linux Drive client is a pain (I tried to mount a subfolder with rclone and am now getting 429-ed (rate limited).

Some unsolved usecases we have are on mobile:

  • We use Google Keeps to share lists and take notes, and would like a mobile, non-Google, syncing notes app with a widget.Rsync is OK, we don't need it to constantly synchronize, daily is enough.

  • We use Google Sheets on mobile to track things like board games and cat weight. Any ideas for a syncing mobile-friendly sheets app?

I've tried Standard Notes but it doesn't seem to have an Android widget.

Cryptpad UI is too cluttered on mobile.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Thank you for all the quality replies!! So far I've found Collabora Office to have an amazing Mobile UI. Unfortunately I can't edit files in Proton Drive in another app on Android, and manually downloading and uploading sucks. So I'll need to figure something out for sync.

In terms of notes: Standard Notes, Joplin and the Obsidian apps I found have no included widget. NotallyX does, and the styling feels a lot like Keep. There is a separate ObsidianToDoWidget app but it hasn't seen any update in 2 years. Dark Note looks nice but looks like it isn't open source.

So for now I'll go with NotallyX for the note widget.

Both Collabora Office and NotallyX will need an external app for sync so I'll check SyncThing For Android now.

A complaint I've had for a while is that the Proton Mail bridge auto starts with the ProtonMail Bridge configuration window open. If you're like me, everytime you restart your computer, Proton Mail Bridge jumps up in your face and you immediately close it.

TIL (today I learned), there's a flag you can pass on the command line "--no-window" that starts the app without opening a window.

If you edit your system startup entry (this varies by operating system) and add this flag to its command line arguments, Proton Mail Bridge will still start, however, it will start to the tray and no window will appear.

As an example on KDE Linux:

  1. Search for "Autostart"
  2. Press the "See Properties" button on the Proton Mail Bridge Autostart entry
  3. Go to the "Application" tab
  4. Add "--no-window" to the "Arguments" text box (it should be an empty text box, if it's not make sure there's a space between any existing arguments, e.g., "--foo" -> "--foo --no-window" not "--foo" -> "--foo--no-window")
  5. Press "OK" and the next time you reboot your computer, Proton Mail should auto start in the background to the tray.

I've seen this posted a couple of times in comments, it seems like a reasonable investigation in to the recent shit storm

I usually actively avoid engaging in anything to do with US politics as it's pointless getting depressed by an awful situation I have zero control over; this post is not about fueling arguments or making us all feel worse, just determining if a useful tech company has gone to shit (TL;DR: probably not).

Hey all, I’m thinking of moving my whole family over to Proton Family, mostly for the combination of multiple email accounts for our custom domain and shared storage.

But I have some considerations, currently we have a single account from another storage provider where we all ~~sync~~ upload photos to different folders. I then have a sync to PC so I always have a local backup of everything, both in case anything happens to the provider and also if I want to switch provider everything is already exported.

My question is, is it possible to have something similar with proton? Can the proton client sync both files and photos to PC? I’ve tried reading up but it’s not clear to me.

Thanks in advance edited for clarity
