Utetheisa pulchella, l'Écaille du myosotis ou la Gentille, est une espèce d'insectes lépidoptères de la famille des Erebidae et du genre Utetheisa. Ce papillon subtropical, présent au Sud de l'Asie et sur l'ensemble du continent africain, se rencontre également en Europe sur le pourtour méditerranéen. Historiquement assez peu représenté en climat continental, il semble s'y propager à la faveur du réchauffement climatique.

[Il] fait des incursions migratoires en climats atlantique et continental jusqu'à une limite septentrionale située au sud de l'Irlande, au sud de la Grande Bretagne, aux Pays-Bas, au Danemark et en Biélorussie. Il s'agit de la seule espèce européenne du genre Utetheisa .

[En Europe], l'espèce est poussée par les vents du sud chargés de sable du Sahara. [...] Il semble y avoir une corrélation entre le nombre de ses mentions dans les relevés naturalistes et les années aux vendanges précoces des XIXe et XXe caractérisées par des étés chauds et secs.

Le canard mandarin (Aix galericulata) est une espèce de canards appartenant à la famille des anatidés, originaire d'Asie du Nord-Est. Il peut cependant être observé à l'état sauvage en Europe où quelques individus échappés de captivité se sont acclimatés et s'y reproduisent aujourd'hui régulièrement.

Good morning. 🦆🦆🦆18 September 2025Yesterday I had my annual wellness check—my first, actually. I think Medicare mandates them, but I’d somehow skated by for years without one.

During the visit, a young woman asked me to remember three words: dollar, mountain, heaven. Then she handed me a blank sheet and asked me to draw a clock set to two o’clock. I asked if she wanted a digital clock, which was a subtle joke that didn’t land. Most of mine don’t. They’re more for the archive than the audience.

Later, a nurse practitioner rolled in with her laptop perched on a portable standing desk. While reviewing my chart, she asked if I remembered the three words. I said, “Dollar, mountain, heaven.” She nodded, typed something, and moved on. No fanfare. No confetti. Just quiet data entry.

Now, I could tell you she said, “That’s amazing—hardly anyone gets them right. If you get them in order, they give you extra points.” But that part I made up because I find it hilarious. The truth is, she nodded and entered something into the system, probably assigning me a cognitive score that will follow me quietly through the bureaucracy.

My wife later informed me that those little questions were a cognitive test. Of course, I knew that. Cognition is one of those things I try to keep a lid on so it doesn’t escape and start narrating everything.

Speaking of cognition—have you ever woken up after a procedure feeling wide awake but not quite there? You say things that seem perfectly reasonable at the time. Like telling a nurse who’s briefing you that she talks fast, as if it’s the most astonishing revelation. Later, you replay it and realize you were narrating the obvious, like a documentary voiceover for your own disorientation.

La Mecaphesa asperate est une petite araignée d'Amérique du Nord et centrale, ainsi que des Antilles. Elle appartient à la famille des Thomisidae. Elle est jaune ou verdâtre avec des tâches rougeâtres. Cela lui permet de se camoufler dans les fleurs des prairies, friches et buissons, où elle chasse à l’affut, en attendant une proie en embuscade.

La femelle ne tisse pas de toile. Elle place ses œufs sur le rebord d’une feuille en les protégeant avec de la soie.

Aux États-Unis, on la classe parmi les araignées crabes, en raison de la longueur et la disposition de ses pattes avant, ainsi que pour sa capacité à se déplacer dans toutes les directions. Elle est surnommée "Northern crab spider" (araignée-crabe du Nord).

Flight Over SandI witnessed this scene last year in Gulfport, Mississippi. A great blue heron (Ardea herodias) flew low over a sandy beach during low tide, its wings wide and steady just above the shoreline.
