I am kind of too scared to ask here, but what did it actually achieve?

I remember way back watching the show west wing. I always assumed the staff on the show was small just because it was TV. And that really the Pres had a large staff with experts on just about everything. But seeing the current administration use chatgpt to figure out reciprocal tarriffs and such, maybe they really don't have much more staff than the TV show portrayed.
If true I would find it kinda funny that they struggle to do their job due to limited staff while claiming that government agencies have too much staff.

For me it's Glass Animals. When I first listened to Heat Waves and other songs on Spotify they never struck me as masterpieces, but holy shit are they a VIBE when performed live.. I was jumping like a child in their concert!

Isabel Larosa was also a pleasant surprise. I only knew her songs as those overdone in reels but damn is that girl (and her brother) born for the stage! She has insane energy and holds her audience even without a supporting live band.

I remember tossing a sibling into a bob-omb fire in Smash saying "I was the guardian" and then let him know it was okay and didnt make them less of a dude to cry tears of joy cuz he was finally going home 🎊

So my girlfriend apologises compulsively. I find it easy to talk to her about the reasons why she may do that; however, she posed to me a question today which I found a little more tricky to answer:

How do I feel when I tell her to stop apologising, and why do I feel the need to tell her to stop apologising?

It's honestly something I never gave thought to before. It is a very, very minor annoyance - to the point where I feel calling it an 'annoyance' is too harsh - but I don't actually know why I feel the need to tell her stop doing it all the time.

I'm hoping someone can help me put it into words. So I ask you, Lemmy: how does it feel when someone apologises too much, and why do you feel the need to tell them to stop apologising?

My OS is Linux Mint.

I have been using Mastodon for over 2 years (and Lemmy since August 2024).

I'm still a bit mystified about the use of Favorites.
Personally, I use them thusly:

1. If I think a post is good in some way, but that my followers probably wouldn't want to read it (if it's in another language, or if it's personal, etc.) So Favorite only, no boost.

2. If I like a post, and I want to give it extra traction beyond the boost I am also giving it. (I use this a lot.)

The second use is based on the statement on the mastodon.social instance Explore page: "These posts from across the fediverse are gaining traction today. Newer posts with more boosts and favorites are ranked higher." (emphasis added)

But I notice that most posts with many boosts don't also have many Favorites, so clearly I am out of step with most Mastodon users.

So could people enlighten me on this? Thanks.

Recently had to move back to my apartment cause I broke up with my bf. To start MOVING IS IMPOSSIBLE for many reasons, please don't even ask.

Was hoping for a fresh start with the psychopaths who live below me. I did everything possible to gaslight myself into thinking it was all just a big misunderstanding and that there was hope to repair our relations.

Basically the first day, I had ptsd from before. I tried my hardest to tip toe the entire day, and to never walk quickly so that I don't bother them (dress despite hearing them stomping and walking aggressively).

The entire time I am on edge because every time I make the smallest noise they counterattack it, doesn't matter if it's an accident or once per day. So basically my body and mind is always in a state of fight or flight, bracing itself constantly for a reaction.

Even then, I had to listen to them being noisy af. At one point I tried to turn on my tv on THE LOWEST VOLUME and it wasn't in response to anything they did. They immediately but some vibrating device on and it kept buzzing it sounded like a drill but it was just a ceiling vibrator and I recorded it. They stopped since then I think they realized it's too obvious or they could only use the plausible deniability to confuse it with some dude that was renovating for 5 minutes.

After 3 days have passed of living here, I'm realizing there seems to be no winning.

Basically their rules are, that they can make as much noise as they want, but if I make the tiniest noise I will be punished.

Not only that, but they also attack unprovoked. I feel like they are genuinely trying their absolute hardest to get a reaction out of me, it's like their hobby or something. The third day I put my earplugs in, and even when I was COMPLETELY SILENT LYING ON THE COUCH FOR HOURS, they started escalating and they dropped a really heavy object to the point where the whole apartment building vibrated. They also hammer all day at random times including quiet hours but they do it really quietly, to the point where it's legal. Like its enough to drive you literally insane.

They also randomly aggressively stomp and they also do stuff to imitate me. Like if I read something funny and laugh (im not obnoxious) right after they will slam stuff or stomp aggressively. Keep in mind I literally laughed once not like I've been annoying them 24/7.

Now everyone will try to gaslight me but there's a lot more that proves they are doing it on purpose, and I'm NOT delusional or imagining things.

Is there actually nothing I can do? Like I don't even think sueing them would help cause they're not gonna move out.

I just don't get why they're doing it. I'm also worried about them framing me. I feel like most people in the apartment have already turned against me cause I'm the only foreigner who speaks with an accent here.

For example, once I tried going to different floors to see where the sound was coming from, and 2 different people complained immediately and reported me saying I'm "creepy" and "invading their space" and need to stop immediately or they'll call the cops (I was a 26 year old girl at the time)...

They immediately threatened they would have a meeting with me and the property manager and the other 2 people to have a "talk" with me

I just don't know wtf to do anymore and I don't understand why I'm the target of everything

A specific example from me would be implementing LLM AI into my code (genetically) and without more details than that I'll get people demanding that I don't do that and giving suggestions for what I should do.

Suggestions are cool, but I'm gonna ask why I should not put LLM in my code in a generic sense just to have my question ignored or have lies and insults hurled my way

It's cool if you want to answer that question, I'm just curious about other people's similar story about receiving resistance to follow up questions if you just have to say those people aren't worth it or you feel like you missed something you shouldn't have in those situations.

Is it super standardised, like where all 30 or 40 pin LVDS connections are the same, as in pin and voltage compatible?

Are there hardware peripherals in a microcontroller that just drive LVDS like how UART, SPI, CAN, etc. work? Or is it a messy complicated thing with display specific power supply voltages, and unique power management requirements, baud rates and such?

I can find lots of old style monitor to HDMI or VGA conversions for an old laptop screen based on display model number. But what I am looking for is a USB-C/USB-3 to LVDS converter board small enough to fit into an old apple laptop top shell and act as a second monitor with all power and functionality controlled through the USB interface. I have the fab skills. If there is a simple chip that does USB-C PD/display to LVDS, I'll toss it in KiCAD and etch it myself if I can get the chip. In my past experience with small displays for hobby microcontrollers, they were anything but standard in most cases. I have never messed with the larger stuff though. It appears like most of the old style VGA/HDMI converter boards are mostly sold with the same hardware/board with the proper LVDS connector installed.

I can take care of the backlight driver part. I'm mostly concerned with what is going on with LVDS in practice. Anyone familiar with the subject on Lemmy?

Here sucks is in the sense of suckless philosophy, I don't think everybody likes the suckless movement but I've seen that many people, me included, don't like how modern web apps look like (messenger and tiktok are like the worst). So if I want to make interactive web apps, what are the better technologies to not make the web shittier ?

Almost all business applications have horizontal menus and ribbons that take up a decent percentage of a landscape monitor instead of utilising the "spare" screen space on the left or right, and a taskbar usually sits at the bottom or top of the screen eating up even more space (yes I know this can be changed but it's not the default).

Documents are traditionally printed/read in portrait which is reflected on digital documents.

Programmers often rotate their screens to be portrait in order to see more of the code.

Most web pages rarely seem to make use of horizontal real estate, and scrolling is almost universally vertical. Even phones are utilised in portrait for the vast majority of time, and many web pages are designed for mobile first.

Beyond media consumption and production, it feels like the most commonly used workplace productivity apps are less useful in landscape mode. So why aren't more office-based computer screens giant squares instead of horizontal rectangles?
