Yet again the Internet Archiving is suffering big this time, a coalition of major record labels filed a lawsuit against the Internet Archive demanding $700 million for the extensive catalog of 78 rpm records. 78s are sometimes more than a century old at this point and i bet a lot of them are out of copyright, but i suppose for the few that still are majors are hitting it big towards the IA

This lawsuit is pretty much another existential threat to the Internet Archive and everything it preserves, including the Wayback Machine, and we're fucked if we ever lose access to the Wayback Machine.

the original article asked to sign a petition, but i think a more logical way to support is to donate them directly so that they have more money to better defend themselves in court in this and other cases they'll undoubtedly face in the future

I'm getting a tad frustrated with the movies that get downloaded by my radarr setup. Mostly its the letterboxing being encoded in the file which on an ultrawide results in a full black border. Also just shoddy quality even on huge files.

With anime there is seadex and some reviewers here and there that give opinions on the best release to grab, but is there something like that for movies or is there only trash guides? One of the things that I've seen in anime reviews is that sometimes the bluray is plain old worse quality compared to the streaming platforms. Does anyone know of places where that gets noted?

Should I just download the largest file and get hardware encode and decode supporting gpu? Will I have encryption problems if I self encode from disk rips instead of using media player ready files?

Anybody else had this issue.

I have a media server setup with Plex and Jellyfin and now people here prefer Jellyfin but Plex is available on more devices and my users prefer it.

Now I tried watching several movies on iPhone via Plex app and it kept freezing and I had to exit and start again and half the time it wouldn’t remember where I was. I tried to watch the same movies on Jellyfin, again on iPhone and no issue.

Any thoughts? I did watch a movie at my friends on Plex through Firestick with no issue so not sure if it’s iOS or my home network and Plex or something else.

I switched to windscribe last month because the proton CEO starting spewing politcal BS, and I wanted port forwarding that wasn't locked behind a shitty GUI.

As far as I was concerned setup was super easy, the VPN speeds were great, and port forwarding worked really nicely. The whole price for a fixed server and port forward, + unlimited data was a bit much (at $95/year) but for the ease of use and speeds I was getting, I was happy to stick with them.

My setup is a always-on server with a 1gbps connection, where yes, I fucking seed my shit, all of it. I have about 30TB of linux ISOs and counting, and it's rare that my combined upload speed is less than 1MBps, ever.

Which lead me to getting banned from windscribe with no notice or warning in the middle of last week. This lead to me having to spend tracker points to avoid HnR, and i'm also unable to grab any new ISOs until I find a new VPN provider that won't ban me for actually using the service full time.

I did shoot them an email (after talking' with their AI bot first), and they were actually helpful enough. The offered to restore support, so long as I promised to not torrent with them again (which, I honestly did promise not to. I'm not sticking with a VPN service that can't handle me actually using it for what it's advertised for) and they did unban the account. Whole email chain took about three days to get resolved.

My sticking point is that they still have instructions on setting up torrents on their own website, and that they specifically allow for unlimited data (with the plan i paid for) so long as it's just one user. I did not break those rules. After clarifying that in the support email, they still said that I was using too much data (despite the unlimited data advertisement) and that torrenting was not allowed on their service.

TL:DR: Windscribe bans you if you use a lot of data, and support says torrents aren't allowed, despite their website advertising such. Proof in the attached images.

If y'all have any other suggestions for a VPN that allow port forwarding i'd really appreciate it.

Translating the Debian install instructions to tor network use, we have:

  torsocks wget https://apt.benthetechguy.net/benthetechguy-archive-keyring.gpg -O /usr/share/keyrings/benthetechguy-archive-keyring.gpg
  echo "deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/benthetechguy-archive-keyring.gpg] tor://apt.benthetechguy.net/debian bookworm non-free" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/benthetechguy.list
  apt update
  apt install makemkv

apt update yields:

Ign:9 tor+https://apt.benthetechguy.net/debian bookworm InRelease
Ign:9 tor+https://apt.benthetechguy.net/debian bookworm InRelease
Ign:9 tor+https://apt.benthetechguy.net/debian bookworm InRelease
Err:9 tor+https://apt.benthetechguy.net/debian bookworm InRelease
  Connection failed [IP: 127.0.0.1 9050]

Turns out apt.benthetechguy.net is jailed in Cloudflare. And apparently the code is not developed out in the open -- there is no public code repo or even a bug tracker. Even the forums are a bit exclusive (registration on a particular host is required and disposable email addresses are refused). There is no makemkv IRC channel (according to netsplit.de).

There is a blurb somewhere that the author is looking to get MakeMKV into the official Debian repos and is looking for a sponsor (someone with a Debian account). But I wonder if this project would even qualify for the non-free category. Debian does not just take any non-free s/w.. it's more for drivers and the like.

Alternatives?

The reason I looked into #makemkv was that Handbrake essentially forces users into a long CPU-intensive transcoding process. It cannot simply rip the bits as they are. MakeMKV relieves us of transcoding at the same time as ripping. But getting it is a shit show.

Yes. All the yes. I was shaky on it at first, because I really didn't want to dive out of my depth when it comes to piracy (which really only includes torrents). I thought it was going to be confusing, but it really is just "sign up, pay, and get your API key". And the price is right (using realDebrid).

However, I'm a little concerned. This makes it all so easy to stream and such, but what happens when everyone starts using it and torrents are no longer downloaded and properly seeded? Should I go out of my way to download something after I watch it and then seed for a few weeks? I still keep my VPN around, so that's totally an option. I'm using Stremio in conjunction with realDebrid.

I think I just want to know a bit more about how it works and how the P2P functions. I want to be able to give back, but I only seed a few torrents at a time. I just don't have the money for a large seeding server right now (which I may fix with a Pi5 at some point). Seeding is currently my only option/skill in helping piracy stay alive and the digital world stay free.

Off topic questionAs a curious afterthought: Does anyone remember Azureus when it was just Azureus? I had a hard time remembering the name (it changed to Vuze) until the other day when I was listening to this: Teleport Pro Keygen Music (YouTube for those that use other frontends). This tune really brought back some good old memories of the OG (loose term, they're OG to me) torrent pirates and their BANGER keygen music. Legends of their time... I really do look up to them. They're fucking heroes.

EU is making a new law which makes your IP the same as (something similar to) your social security number and they say piracy is going to receive a huge blow. Obviously I have no intention of stopping but now I'll have to start using a VPN, if I want to continue my way. However, I do not trust VPNs a lot and I do not like the idea of paying for them (I could just pay for the movie in the first place)

I looked into using Tor network to torrent but it seems like it'd be a hindrance to the network itself, which is going to be a huge inconvenience for other users. Additionally I know that even if I found a way to throttle my bandwidth to remove this problem, Tor isn't exactly made for this sort of thing anyways.

Now, obviously it doesn't have to be torrenting, but I would gladly hear any suggestions on how to avoid paying and getting movies and shows without being caught doing it. Truthfully I was only streaming from websites for many years, so I do not know a lot about torrenting vs direct downloading either. Thanks in advance for any responses.

For those of you that torrent video files this question is geared toward you. I'm looking for a sweet spot between quality, size & speed for HEVC encoding. I'm using FastFlix and seem to be getting really wide and varying speeds.

I'm not really literate on all this video lingo but I can, at least, get it going. Most files take anywhere from 5-17 mins for a 30-40 mins clip. I have a AMD Radeon RX 470 graphics card but when I try and use the VCEEnc it won't let me use CRF which I've heard it the best way.

Anyway, if you're willing to share knowledge or what settings you use when you convert video to HEVC that might help me speed up my processing, I would be eternally grateful.

Seedbox: how to start? (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

Hi people! I have been pirating for myself for over 30 years now, and with the ever growing size of warez and the laughable upstream limit my ISP has, i have come to the point where it's not practical to maintain a 1:1 ratio for all torrents anymore - my active torrent list keeps growing beyond practical limits, and i'm someone who wants to keep sharing things for the people after me, esp. torrents with low amounts of seeds.

I'm pretty sure that i know more than i think i do, but i would be happy about a few pointers to get started with a seedbox. i have beginner linux skills, advanced user skills, and not shy of reading manuals on how to get things to work. i have not tinkered with docker much yet, but i'm willing to learn.

Edit: From what i've learned and seen i tend towards an dedicated server since i might want to host other services for myself too, so suggestions for what hoster to look at are welcome!

Hi, I've found some resources to Jailbreak the Nintendo Switch. However I've got some bad experience with jailbreaking with nintendo stuff. Futhermore, my Switch is updated, and it seems to not be a good thing.

Do you have some more updated resources to do so ? Do you have some advice ?

Thank you very much

I'll admit, when I first started torrent I was not really familiar with how it worked and how important seeding was. I would just use magnet links without configuration to save the torrent and seed after completion. Well.. I have finally, got myself back to 1.00 after a couple months and working to try to always seed double what I get for each torrent.

Often times I was one of the few random seeders available for some of these torrents. Friendly reminder to give back because you never know when you're one of the rare cases that can complete someones long lost file download!

Ahoy mateys, it's time to setup Jellyfin if you prefer not to pay for the privilege of self-hosting your own content.

We are also changing how remote playback works for streaming personal media (that is, playback when not on the same local network as the server). The reality is that we need more resources to continue putting forth the best personal media experience, and as a result, we will no longer offer remote playback as a free feature. This—alongside the new Plex Pass pricing—will help provide those resources. This change will apply to the future release of our new Plex experience for mobile and other platforms.

I’ve been heavily debating between Steam Deck OLED and Switch OLED. My initial thought was getting a Switch OLED, let someone mod it and then download games on it (I don’t care about Nintendo’s Online).

Then I got told it might be better to get Steam Deck OLED and use emulation on it for switch games.

Now I’ve been a bit of researching on both and it seems that Steam Deck runs Linux and that the emulation isn’t really as good as it is on the PC. I don’t have any knowledge on Linux either, plus most of my games are pirated (thus Steam Library isn’t really a thing for me).

Getting the Switch OLED modded going to cost me about €150 but then I’ve been reading that the games are mostly 30FPS locked and that using cheats and/ or mods is a bit of a hassle (similar thing with getting games on it through piracy).

Price wise; Steam Deck OLED going to cost me at least €680 while Switch OLED will cost me €350 (and when Switch 2 comes it might be on sale).

I was wondering what the opinions are on Piracy community here. Which one do you recommend out of the two and why, how true are the things of what I’ve been told and read?

Note; Yes, I would like to get the Switch 2 but since it’ll take a while before it can get hacked/ modded - I don’t want to get it. I refuse to pay €60-70 for each game while they’re like 7 years old.

I recently managed to run the stuff mentioned int he title with the help of:

After having done this I wrote this script, which you can wget with: wget <link copied after right-clicking on the "Raw" button on the gist page>. (now: wget https://gist.githubusercontent.com/Vulwsztyn/b600cb0a4ced7090cb1408e718b990b0/raw/fc1396164f6395100cf2a08e14aa5cf3efdb0a52/arr.py)

Requirements:

  • python
  • pystache (pip install pystache)

How to run

python arr.py (it will ask you a buch of questions before doing anything. You can ofc analyse the code yourself.

What it does?

In short this will ask you for directory names including the root ARR_DIR. In the ARR_DIR it will create the media and configs directories and 3 files:

  • docker-compose.yml
  • .env
  • openvpn.Dockerfile (optional)

You can run it in "dry run" with or without creating the files in the directory you are running it from by answering the 1st question ("Dry run?") with y.

Services in the docker compose:

  • jellyfin - client to watch the media
  • jellyseer - admin page to request the media from arr service
  • jackett - indexer to tell arr services where to download from
  • qflood - dockerised qbittorrent client
  • sonarr (optional) - tv shows
  • radarr (optional) - movies
  • lidarr (optional) - music
  • readarr (optional) - ebooks
  • readarr-audio-books (optional) - audiobooks
  • bazarr (optional) - subtitles
  • homarr (optional) - admin page - I haven't really set it up yet
  • vpn (optional)
  • heimdall (optional) - admin page to aggregate links to all the services

You can see the flowchart for similar setup here

VPN

If you don't tell the script not to use vpn it will

I managed to use th openvpn service with ProtonVPN (which is free for one device). You can use any other if you know how.

How to use?

The script will tell you but in short:

Why Dockerfile

For ProtonVPN this script is needed, so I do it in Dockerfile, since it is impossible in docker-compose.yml

Other services

The script will tell you the same info.

Heimdall

Setup the dashbaord with links to every service.

Go to Go to http://{server_ip}:8090. For each of apps click 'Application list' -> 'Add' and:

  • Add jellyfin with url http://{server_ip}:8096
  • Add jellyseerr with url http://{server_ip}:5055
  • Add sonarr with url http://{server_ip}:8989
  • Add radarr with url http://{server_ip}:7878
  • Add lidarr with url http://{server_ip}:8686
  • Add readarr with url http://{server_ip}:8787
  • Add readarr-audio-books with url http://{server_ip}:8786
  • Add bazarr with url http://{server_ip}:6767
  • Add qbittorrent with url http://{server_ip}:8080

Jackett

Add a few indexers to jackett using the "add indexer" button. You can see the indexers Ithe author of the reddit guide uses use in the image.

Qbittorrent

Go to qbittorrent http://{server_ip}:8080. Default username is admin and password is adminadmin. Change those under Tools -> Options -> WebUI if you wish.

Under Tools -> Options:

  • set 'Default Save Path' to /data/torrents
  • set 'Keep incomplete torrents in:' to /data/torrents/incomplete

Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr/Readarr/Readarr-audio-books

Go to the service (e.g. from heimdall).

  1. set username and password
  2. Settings -> Download Client -> Add -> qBittorrent
    • Host: {server_ip}, Port: 8080, Username: admin, Password: adminadmin (the last 2 will be different if you changed them)
  3. Settings -> Media management -> Root folder -> Add:
    • /data/media/shows for sonarr
    • /data/media/movies for radarr
    • /data/media/music for lidarr
    • /data/media/ebooks for readarr
    • /data/media/audiobooks for readarr-audio-books
  4. Add every relevant indexer
    • Settings -> Indexers -> Add indexer -> Torznab
    • In Jackett copy the Torznab link for the indexer you want to add and paste it in URL
    • Set the API key to the one from Jackett (top right)

Bazarr

Go to bazarr at http://{server_ip}:6767

For sonarr and radarr:

  1. Go to Settings -> General -> Sonarr/Radarr
  2. Set the API key to the one from sonarr/radarr (Settings -> General)
  3. Set address and port

Jellyfin

Go to http://{server_ip}:8096/web/#/dashboard/libraries and add all libraries in /data/media

Hardware acceleration

Go to http://{server_ip}:8096/web/#/dashboard/playback/transcoding. Set proper hardware acceleration. If using nvidia then Nvidia NVENC Check which formats work at https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-and-decode-gpu-support-matrix-new

Jellyseer

Jellyfin integration

Go to http://{server_ip}:8096/web/#/dashboard/keys, Add new key wiht name Jellyseer and copy it.

Go to http://{server_ip}:5055/settings/jellyfin, paste the key, set address and port.

Sonarr/Radarr integration

Go to http://{server_ip}:5055/settings/services and add radarr and sonarr with API keys from their settings -> General.

What next?

After setting everything up to check if it works go to Jellyseer and request some show or movie, which will then be downloaded and available in jellyfin.

Finally there are some more methods to tackle LCP DRM, but the messages to the creator from Readium consortium is so frustrating. Just read this:

"We were planning to now focus on new accessibility features on our open-source Thorium Reader, better access to annotations for blind users and an advanced reading mode for dyslexic people. Too bad; disturbances around LCP will force us to focus on a new round of security measures, ensuring the technology stays useful for ebook lending (stop reading after some time) and as a protection against oversharing."

yt-dlp CLI vs. yt-dlp GUI (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

On Windows 11, is it superior to use the command line interface (e.g., terminal) for interacting with yt-dlp? Or is a GUI like stacher.io sufficient for 99% of needs?

I'm also curious if it is better to use an Ubuntu WSL for yt-dlp CLI for a more streamlined terminal
