like I spell it as “centre” and it seems perfectly fine even though phonetically it doesn’t make much sense

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

it’s identical to vscode, except that a few extensions don’t work (notably, intellicode and the ms c/c++ extensions)

What are some words you feel sound more right in both the American and British English?

I use a mix of the two depending on the word.

For example, I stand by pronouncing words like “Amazon” with an “ehn” sound at the end ovet an “ohn” sound, prefer spelling colour and flavour with a u, and also like using double Ls for words like travelling. Also, it is “grey”. (British English)

However, I pronounce Z as “zee”and call them fries rather than chips.

There are also spellings where I sort of alternate between depending on my mood, such as “meter” vs “metre”and“airplane” vs “aeroplane”

Are there any words that you think sound better in British and American spellings/pronunciations?

I like VSCodium, a vscode build without ms telemetry and such

After some more research, I've found that Lectric ebikes are very good value for money and seem to have good customer support so I've added those instead. Still quite expensive though...

yeah. It would be interesting, but Apple obviously wouldn’t ever do that unfortunately.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

update: I've pushed the changes, you should be able to see them now!

I wonder what a motherboard designed by Apple would look like…

also, given Apple, they would probably try to make everything proprietary (non-standard motherboard shapes, non-standard connecters, etc)

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

also, it would be really tricky to get people to buy new, probably expensive ARM motherboards (especially with Apple involved)

What if Apple decided to release their “M” series processors a desktop CPUs? How would that change the market?

It would also be interesting to see Samsung Foundry release desktop Exynos chips or maybe Qualcomm “X” processors for desktop that are more powerful than the laptop chips.

p.s. I know they would never do anything like that, but it would be interesting to imagine how the market would change with more competitors

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

But it sort of makes sense. If you use english words to name a product, it would be great for english speakers but terrible for anyone else due to translation issues and such.

I do think that they should just name their products with a sensible letters and numbers that’s easier to understand. Instead, you have a race to see who has the biggest number and the most letters :(

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

okay, I’ve added supertelephoto lenses to my list, once I get back to my computer I’ll push the changes!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

fair, using more words doesn’t really solve the issue.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

fair point. Dell in my opinion isn’t so bad at this, especially given their extensive range of products for both consumers and businesses

How do they come up with the most confusing naming schemes on the planet? You would think that making it easy to identify which product is which would boost sales, or someone at least has the sanity to make it easy to understand.

(i.e. CPUs, laptop processors, USB standard, most smartphones, monitors, anything made by Sony that’s not a Playstation…)

Hi everyone! I've been working on "bestof", a huge list of the "best" things in every category.

I came to the conclusion of these picks using both online reviews (both videos and articles) as well as online consensus in various different forums. A lot of them probably aren't very good, please lmk if my picks are terrible! I want to eventually turn this into a really useful source for people looking to buy X thing.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if there's any alterations I should make to my picks! Also, I would like feedback on how to improve the site as a whole!

improvements that others have suggested already:

  • higher contrast colour palette
    • What colour schemes do you think would fit this? I still want there to be a pop of colour, but right now it is very low-contrast
  • more information on WHY I picked the things I did
    • p.s. How should I go about this? Should it be a note at the bottom, a link, a tooltip, or something else?

anyways here's the link: https://swarbler.github.io/bestof/camera-gear/camera-gear/

Note that for the camera section, I've split it into different sections based on FF, APS-C, and M43, with subcategories for the different brands. Each brand has their own merits to their cameras. Should I add that to the site?

I do think that I should add in Olympus (or are they OM-System now?) cameras soon, but which ones are good options? Is the OM-3 any good? How about older models? I've heard that the OM-1 mark one is good value.

The reason 6Ghz was introduced with WiFi 6E and 7 was because 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz was very busy.

My question is why isn’t there anything in between? Why isn’t there a 3Ghz, 3.5Ghz, 4Ghz, etc?

Also, what if things that require very little data transmission used something lower than 2.4Ghz for longer range? (1Ghz or something?)

For example, “Washington” (US), “Brussels” (EU), “Moscow” (Russia).

I guess it’s a short hand for writing “US government”, “Russian government”, etc. but why? And what happens when you’re referring to a country with multiple capitals like South Africa?

You're only able to choose two options, how is that democracy? I thought democracy was about being able to choose anyone you think is suitable to be a leader, not one of two pre-selected people. At that point, it's not much different to a one-party system, just with two people rather than only one person.

For me, it's ublock origin, libredirect, and Dark Background Light Text

edit: woah, that’s a lot of addons! I’ll have to check those out at some point!

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the help! I’ll probably be adding some more inexpensive ebikes that aren’t over $1000 because 90% of people won’t spend that mich in an ebike.

I’ll also need to make the note at the top a bit more clear that bikes are 100% down to preference, and to an extent, e-bikes as well. I’ll also try to mention WHY each of my picks are the “best” since a lot of them seem to come out of thin air. (some of it is wirecutter picks, some are just ones popular on various different forums. I’ll try to make it more clear).

Maybe I could add a link to the source of each of my picks (e.g. to wirecutter, certain forums), maybe even a list of different ones sort of like a linktree but worse looking made using html. (if it’s a combination of a lot of reviews and discussion threads)

original message:

For over a year, I've been working on a project called "bestof", which is a product recommendation site detailing the "best" things in each and every category. I've recently included prices as well thanks to a suggestion from a comment. I'm also planning a high-contrast mode, because right now it's all just green.

I would like some feedback, specifically on the bike section. Are my picks terrible (most probably are), and if so, what else do you suggest? Do you have any feedback on the site as a whole?

Thanks for your help!

What’s the longest chemical formula that spells out a word, but is also an actual chemical formula?

I’m able to come up with “HI”, or hydrogen iodide (which is a real compound). “He” also works, which is just helium.

I’ve tried to use AI to find one, but it was only able to produce CuTe, copper (II) telluride, BiTe, bismuth telluride, and LaTe, lanthanum telluride.

What’s the longest chemical formula that is both valid and spells out a word or phrase?

edit: spelled spell wrong...

Hi all! I've made a website called "bestof", which has been a little project I've been working on for over a year now. I would like your opinion on specifically the audio category. (specifically the "dac/amp", "headphones", "home theater", "microphones", and "speakers" section)

If you have any questions or thing anything needs to be added, changed, or removed, please lmk!

https://swarbler.github.io/bestof/audio/audio

also btw is the Fosi Audio V3 any good? I've seen lots of conflicting reviews, some say it's a very good amp, others say it's not.

sorry about spamming your feeds with 17 cross-posts. that was not right and I won't do it again, I promise!

I would just like your feedback and opinion, good or bad, on the PC components I have on a project I've made called "bestof". I've worked on it for quite some time, and after some recent changes to improve the PC builds section I think it is ready to be shown off.

a few notes:

  • only recommending CPUs that aren't on dead platforms for upgradeability reasons. however, if you are on a budget, I have mentioned the 5600, 12100F, 12400F, and the 5700X3D as solid options
  • PC cases are almost 100% subject to personal preference, I just suggested a few popular options as well as some good cheap ones
  • I did not recommend the RTX 4090 as most people don't need it unless they have money to burn. Both AMD and Nvidia GPUs have been mentioned

If you have any questions or think any of my picks are wrong (which many of them probably are) then please lmk!
