Not to mention, the Trump strategy is to flood the media by alternating between doing/saying stupid shit and dangerous shit. If you're just doing media appearances or whatever you're not going to see the same effect.

Both candidates ran as conservatives that attacked the left side of the Democratic party more than they did Trump's policies. It's not because they were women, it's the policies they stood for.
