What are you talking about? I never said anything about this community

[–] ipitco@lemmybefree.net 3 points 6 hours ago (4 children)

I guess it takes all types to make a community and that includes those that don’t want to participate at full effort all the time.

It's also a way to make the silent majority participate, yea! Most people just browse the web without posting or creating stuff 90% of the time

There's another comment that asked the same thing with replies in it. See https://lemmings.world/comment/16797777

I am just saying the point of these forums is more the conversation and less the voting and it’s really not very useful as a tool, while not being useless.

I compare lemmy to reddit, where voting is important, so I kinda like it, but still feel free to express what I want to say because votes don't have a risk of me locking or shadowbanning my account

Imagine a substack post, as these forums were based on, where someone asks for support with a batch script and someone suggests using a sticky note taped to the monitor. It gets downvoted but no one offers any countering support. No one would use the site for support anymore. It’s clearly not with helpful information, and the person looking at it would not know but just see what looks like an unkind user base.

Lemmy isn't really meant for support, but anyways, there will always be someone to help or reply, trust me, people (including me) can't stop giving their opinions or showing off

If you don't want to focus too much on the subject, voting is an easy way to generate interaction, show that the subject is alive and stuff

I probably wouldn't often go to Lemmy if it didn't have votes to be honest. I like leaving my mark, and voting feels like i'm contributing to the ecosystem a bit

Annexationphobia actually.

Damn, the fancy word for xenophobic people haha

Plus they way Matt & Tray consistently portray Canadians is hilarious and I can’t be the only Canadian who thinks so.

Yea, although the running gag wears off for me. It's just becoming unfun

But for real, I just wanna interact with more Canadians.

Fair enough

the same way nobody forces you to work at mcdonalds and shit

but sometimes you just can't take the risk to lose your job

Many are probably not in this situation though

Towelie is such an annoying character at first but I enjoyed the tegridy story arc

Also I created a Canadian group because for the most part I'm only interreacting with lemmy.ca and ignoring other instances.

Xenophobia (jk)

You can’t expect everyone to voice everything. Someone else probably will at some point, and anyways, seeing downvotes is useful to know that there’s no full consensus

It can also allow you to fact check, to an extent, what’s said

Seeing an high amount of downvotes means you shouldn’t trust what’s written without prior research. It stands for everything, but we don’t have time to check most information we learn nowadays

Downvoting comments I don’t agree with doesn’t seem that bad either

It’s useful to show that not everyone thinks the same. When I see controversial comments and posts, it sparks my curiosity and I start really thinking about it

I still fail to see how anarchism inherently wants to make salaries and income more even

That’s an extension that belongs to a branch of anarchism, it is not supposed to be like this by definition

I actually never really ate indian food and planned on testing soon! I love the taste of curry though

Like the call center thing seems to be a bad stereotype

it's obviously a stereotype, but call centers are often associated with them because a lot of scammers are indian because it's a pretty poor country and they have infrastructure to handle this

I love flood from allover India, but I rather get it served by an immigrant in my country, compared to actually getting it served in India

I would as well, I prefer my country's hygiene norms and laws haha (and afaik their government and institutions are corrupted, as for many other countries, so better not to finance that)

I'll stay away from bollywood though!

lemmy devs probably thought it was important enough to add then

It's easier to ~~censor~~ moderate lemmy.ml this way
