When I protested a couple weeks ago a few people yelled at me at that I didn’t love America… the irony would be hilarious if it wasn’t reflecting a sad reality.
Truth is, Trumpists absolutely do not like free speech.

What also pisses me off is anything pro-Palestine is de facto pro-Hamas. The Feds are holding these students hostage because they are furthering “terrorism” on US soil.
They also say these foreign students are engaged in un-American activities, but the most American activity should be free speech and protesting the government…
Yea the cannibalism is the hook but the whole story is enthralling. Thanks for the rec, I see this book is listed in “further reading”, I gotta check it out!
One aspect that struck me too was that American law did not apply west of the continental divide, so justice within the wagon train was decided by the group. Also, families within the wagons had a hierarchy and carried debts between one another if they borrowed one another’s supplies. I never really thought about the economics and different classes of people traveling together. Even when they were dying in the cabins (which were separated by miles) at Truckee lake, one family member coughed up $25 ($1000 today) to buy the ox carcass from another family… it’s crazy they didn’t pool resources and try to survive together.
I agree it seems a little silly to downvote especially if you follow the instance. If I had to make a guess, if you don’t follow this instance and this post appears in your “All” or “local” feed, then some users might downvote because it’s not relevant to them or they don’t like the topic of cannibalism…or maybe their finger slipped.
My favorite Vic scene is when he sings “The Best is Yet to Come” with Sisko, Avery Brooks is such a great singer.
However, the scene is contrasted with the fact that in the scene previous O’Brian was strip searched by a hologram guard. Julian asks him what happened to which O’Brian retorts “I don’t want to talk about it”. The rest of the crew join in the musical ensemble but I can’t imagine O’Brian was really in the singing mood after that ordeal.
Meanwhile people like Bernie and AOC are hitting up the mid-west and the southwest in his “fighting oligarchy” tour. Schumer is tone deaf to the time and a self righteous book tour ain’t the answer. Screenshot from a Bernie update a couple days ago.
Yea I get that, and explaining its usefulness will fall on deaf GOP ears, but for the record It’s not even hazardous waste…it’s the urban soils that tend to have a lot of organic carbon content from all the living shit and garbage used as backfill especially in east coast cities. Standard protocols for direct soil sampling don’t consider carbon as much as they should and also remote methods (like GPR) don’t measure total organic carbon. Not high stakes research but important to get a full picture of the soils on a building site.
She hasn’t been layed off yet but, yea, only a matter of time…
One of my close friends got her doctorate last year and recently hired as a scientist at EPA. She is improving methods of surveying urban soils using remote methods like ground penetrating radar, this helps to inform landowners/potential developers the true conditions of the soil they are building on. A shame the government doesn’t think that’s important anymore.
It is actually incredible how even the most bipartisan bills are getting axed, like the CHIP act. I always knew he loathed Obama-Biden so much he would cancel any and everything they did but, man, it’s just sad to see he doesn’t have an ounce of decency.
It’s difficult notion to wrestle with… I never like showing my patriotism and I always read American history very critically (thanks Howard Zinn!) but it’s also the only country I’ve lived in and will probably stay in for the rest of my life. I’m inspired that change can happen (even if it’s bad) in this country and even if is a long and hard path, I guess I can’t say I’ve given up yet. I also have two kids so I gotta try to give them something better.
