Epic Games CEO says it’s ‘really irresponsible’ of Steam to make studios disclose AI use

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has criticised rival Valve for forcing studios to disclose when they use AI in game development. Since 2024, Valve has required developers to disclose on Steam whether generative AI was used in the creation of their games. This then appears on the game’s store page in a section called ‘AI Generated Content Disclosure’. Earlier this month at a State of Unreal event in Chicago, Epic showed how AI large language models (LLMs) can be used directly with Unreal Engine 6 to generate content. Epic stressed that developers will have final control over their creations and can manually change their results. 🖊️️🤖

Valve aren't putting any exclusives on the Steam Machine because they see "the whole PC catalog as our 'launch exclusive'"

The Steam Machine is going to sit in an odd place when it arrives. But it differs from most traditional consoles in that it won't be coming with any games exclusive to the hardware. That's because for Valve, they want the Steam Machine to be as open as possible. As Bloomberg notes, more people with PC hardware ultimately benefits Valve, as it means more people buying games through Steam. As mentioned, there's no plans for a Steam Machine exclusive, despite the infinitely spawning rumours about a new Half-Life that seem to crop up at least once a month. 🖊️️🤖

CD Projekt Red boss believes some fans were forever burned by Cyberpunk 2077's disastrous launch: 'I'm convinced that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely'

The infamous launch of Cyberpunk 2077 was a low point in CD Projekt Red's history. Yet at the same time, Cyberpunk 2077 was a huge commercial success, and CD Projekt used some of those profits to fix its broken blockbuster. Its 2.0 patch, combined with the excellent Phantom Liberty expansion, addressed many of the RPG's problems, successfully turning around the game's reputation and cementing its place as a roleplaying great. "I'm convinced that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely, and that's a fair thing. We have a rough ten-year rolling plan, but the goal is not to flood the games market with CDPR games." 🖊️️🤖

Microsoft researcher builds goat-powered neural network in Age of Empires 2 to show why we should 'stop assuming that LLMs behave like humans just because they were trained with natural language'

Since large-language models like ChatGPT can generate natural language responses that appear human-like in tone, this has led to considerable discussion over whether LLMs might themselves be sentient. But because the fundamentals are goats and grass rather than natural language, it prevents observers from perceiving the resulting behaviours and output as human. The reason this is important is that assuming LLMs have human-like properties without demonstrative proof could lead us to all manner of problems, such as in scientific research. "I propose that we need to stop assuming that LLMs behave like humans just because they were trained with natural language," de Wynter said. "Instead, we should perform experiments that allow us to see LLMs as how they are, not how we believe they should be." 🖊️️🤖

"I torture myself over every last detail": Stardew Valley's creator is having a real time of it with Haunted Chocolatier's recipe book interface

Stardew Valley creator Eric 'ConcernedApe' Barone has released his latest reminder that yes, he's still working on Haunted Chocolatier, the action-RPG and life sim in which you run a sweetshop in a realm of ghosts. This particular blogpost is notable for a mildly agonised aside about the game's recipe book interface, which needs to be "seamless, clear, intuitive, satisfying, aesthetic", in a word, perfect. The data needs to be grouped into compelling, intuitive and easy to read/understand groupings. "If all of that is accomplished then the player is now comfortable while perusing the recipe book. Besides the previous failed attempt at a physical Space Cadet Pinball table done by an obscure WordPress blogger in 2012, there have been other efforts to preserve this classic for the modern age. This includes a gorgeous, detailed Blender-made Space Cadet pinball table dropped on the r/Pinball subreddit in December 2022, and various ports including a browser-playable version at ClassicReload (the DOSZone version based on an open-source port is more popular, but didn't work in my testing.) Flathub moves to ban nearly all apps and submissions made with generative AI

Flathub, one of the most popular ways to grab applications on Linux, has a newly updated generative AI policy - where it's pretty much all banned. Paralives continues to sound promising with a roadmap outlining free updates The Sims would normally charge for

While I've never really played all that much of The Sims (does maybe four hours of My Sims Kingdom from when I was 11 count? All of this to say, Paralives continues to sound convincing for the expansion fatigued Simmers thanks to its first roadmap. Ahead of the game's early access release next week, Paralives Studio shared a sparsely detailed but conceptually promising roadmap outlining what you can expect in the coming months and years. It's when you get to the bit about free updates that'll really have you questioning how The Sims does things. No further details about what else can be expected in updates were shared, but this does have me wondering how The Sims will fare if Paralives does well. 🖊️️🤖

Sadly, none of them seem like they have been updated at all, so it's a case of taking them as they come. Contrary to stereotypes, gamers tend to be more inclusive than the general public, study finds

In a paper published in the journal Psychology of Popular Media, scientists report that video game players tend to hold more inclusive cultural values than the general American public. They sometimes use social media to organize boycotts of game development studios that hire consultants to help write more inclusive storylines. One prominent example involved a consulting studio called Sweet Baby Inc., which was targeted by player-led social media campaigns in late 2023. They found that shooter game players were also more likely to hold inclusive values regarding gender roles and equality compared to the general public. “The average person should take away from our findings that video game players are not some monolithic community,” Pauley told PsyPost. 🖊️️🤖

PlayStation’s First-Party Sales Collapse Paints a Picture of Concern

The sales figures peaked around 2020, with the label securing a whopping 58.4 million first-party sales within 12 months. It’s relatively easy to explain some of these numbers, but with PlayStation’s next State of Play arriving later today, folks are wondering what else the titan has in the bank. PlayStation 5’s First-Party Sales Aren’t Doing So HotIn a study published by Game File’s Stephen Totilo, the last six years of financial data were collated and represented in a neat graph, showcasing PlayStation’s first-party performance of late. 60% of PC gamers have no plans to build a new PC in the next two years — AI pricing crunch on RAM and other components paralyze enthusiast market

In a survey taken by more than 1,500 readers in May, exactly 60% confirmed that they are waiting two years or more to build their next PC. It's no secret that the PC gaming industry is on its knees, driven by a global shortage of vital components required for building AI data centers. As you might expect, the intent and desire to build largely drops proportionately as the timeline shortens, reflecting the grim market conditions. A total of just 15% of respondents will build a PC in the next six months, and a total of only 10% will build one in the next three. However, discounts at those events are unlikely to yield anything close to a return to pre-AI crunch pricing. 🖊️️🤖

Valve have revealed a round of changes to the tags which can be applied to games on the Steam store. There is now also a Steam tag dedicated specifically to Capybaras. Arguably more noteworthy are the tags Valve have ditched. Most notably in light of the issues surrounding adult games and payment processors last year is the removal of the NSFW and Mature tags. Weird Weekend Weird Weekend is our regular Saturday column where we celebrate PC gaming oddities: peculiar games, strange bits of trivia, forgotten history. Did you know Frodo never reached Mordor, but was actually beaten to death by three identical men of no known affiliation in a mill at the edge of the Shire? Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Vol. In the CD version of the game, this preamble is communicated in the form of snippets of the 1978 Ralph Bakshi version of Lord of the Rings, rendered in scintillating 200p. Alas, no one really bought Interplay's LOTR, nor its Two-Towers-based sequel, and its moisturised Gandalf and dead Frodo slipped into the dustbin of history. 🖊️️🤖

On the flip side is interactive fiction, which puts the story before anything else. While it was popular back in the early days of computing, interactive fiction has also seen a resurgence of popularity in recent years. Here are five open-source tools that you can use to create your own interactive fiction. But before that, let me tell you what interactive fiction is. Today, I’ll show you some tools that you can use to create Interactive Fiction on Linux. 🖊️️🤖

Valve's new low-VRAM Linux fix nearly triples FPS in select games on AMD's RX 6500 XT

TL;DR: Valve engineer Natalie Vlock introduced a VRAM optimization for Linux that prioritizes foreground games over background apps when VRAM is low, improving performance on 4GB GPUs. Tests showed significant FPS gains in Alan Wake II, Resident Evil: Requiem, and modest boosts in Silent Hill, benefiting low-VRAM cards. Earlier in April 2026, Valve engineer Natalie Vlock introduced a new VRAM optimization for Linux. The game was tested at 1080p on low settings with FSR set to Quality. With the VRAM optimization applied, average frame rates jumped from 14 FPS to 41 FPS, while 1% lows improved from 12 to 28 FPS. 🖊️️🤖

Xbox Game Pass ‘has become too expensive,’ says Microsoft’s new gaming chief in leaked memo

Microsoft’s new Xbox chief, Asha Sharma, has signaled that Xbox Game Pass pricing is about to change. In an internal memo to Xbox employees, obtained by The Verge, Sharma admits that “Game Pass has become too expensive for players” and that Microsoft needs “a better value equation.”“Game Pass is central to gaming value on Xbox. “Short term, Game Pass has become too expensive for players, so we need a better value equation. The company tried to justify the price hike with a variety of upgrades across all of its Xbox Game Pass tiers, but the cost increase has clearly taken its toll on Game Pass. Sharma references the “online chatter” about rumors of Microsoft changing Game Pass pricing, and says she’ll “go deeper” with Xbox employees next week. 🖊️️🤖

PlayStation Addresses PS5 DRM Concerns in New Statement

PlayStation has broken its silence on the drama surrounding DRM concerns with the PS4 and PS5. This was the exact kind of DRM that Sony roasted Xbox over back in 2013, ahead of the PS4 and Xbox One’s respective launches. “ PlayStation confirmed that there is a one-time check-in to confirm the license, but beyond that, players won’t experience any interruptions. “A one-time online check is required to confirm the game's license, after which no further check-ins are required." To combat this, PlayStation released a short, cheeky video explaining how players could share games on PS4. 🖊️️🤖

If you were ever in doubt as to whether the retro gaming community craves more titles like the GBC Pokémon offerings, then take a look at Dokimon: Quest. This game channels everything we loved about Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, as well as the 8-bit feel of the GBC's back catalogue, as a whole. Credit: Yanako RPGSSome of you might have played Dokimon: Quest on Steam or even on Nintendo Switch as Doki Monsters: Quest, and now it's coming to iOS for iPhone users to download and play anytime, anywhere without bringing a console along for the ride. Dokimon: Quest isn't a ROM hack; it's a new RPG from Yanako RPGs with a full 15+ hour story and 144 monsters to capture and train up along the way. Fight bad guys, train monsters, save the day - it's a format you're very familiar with, but with a twist that adds more RPG features than the standard Pokémon games. 🖊️️🤖

Stop Killing Games throw weight behind California bill that would force companies to either keep games working independently after server shutdowns or issue refunds

The Californian legislation cited in Stop Killing Games' latest progress update on Reddit is dubbed the "Protect our Games Act", and was initially put forward by Chris Ward - a member of California's State Assembly - in February this year. Stop Killing Games say they had a hand in "advising on the drafting of" it. Funnily enough, the latter's also the date of a European Parliament public hearing about Stop Killing Games' citizens’ initiative - the petition the group recently submitted to the body. Finally, Stop Killing Games organiser Moritz Katzner noted that he was called in to advise the UK government's Department for Culture, Media & Sport on unspecified matters related to the campaign last week. He added that Stop Killing Games are "planning to build a stronger presence in the UK", but didn't provide any more details. 🖊️️🤖

The Settlers II (E114)

Like an actual Roman commander, in Blue Byte's Settlers II you don't tell each of your soldiers directly what to do, or what to produce. Join us as we discover what the word "Wuselfaktor" means and whether an indirectly controlled strategy game makes any sense at all. The Secret of Monkey Island Project

The Secret of monkey island projectThe ongoing work involves the classic The Secret of Monkey Island. We are converting the complete game for the Commodore 64. My task in this project is to bring all the graphics to the screen on the Commodore 64 platform. This is a large task involving a meticulous process of hand-drawing each background, as well as the animations and characters. The pixel art and animations are made by Joachim Ljunggren/Pixeldust. 🖊️️🤖

Dokimon: Quest Brings Pokémon GBC-Style Gameplay To iOS
