I don't understand why the author thinks this is something new. Russia has been doing the same horrific things to Ukraine for two years and Westerners are still constantly finding reasons not to care. That's not to mention Sudan, Tigray, and Xinjiang. Maybe it's just too horrifying for him to realize that the Western world doesn't care about genocides and hasn't for decades.
