Rocket Man - Jesse Welles (www.youtube.com)
submitted 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I heard the altar call of the rocket man

as he pleaded on the mount

then were we like those who dream

as the tired tiger jumped through hoops of fire

one last time for the crowd

then were we like those who dream

I saw containerships of man's demise

ride tidal waves to hell

then were we like those who dream

and the whales that did swim by they did not blink

or wish us well

then were we like those who dreamed

all the stones that

broke yer bones won't

maim the soul inside you

time's jus a thing you live through baby

all the things that

make me sing are

jus songs I'm relearning

there's nothing here I'm earning

and on the 8th day man made a machine

likened to his image

then were we like those who dream

and he argued whether or whether not

it would kill and eat his village then were they like those who dream

all the stones that

broke yer bones won't

maim the soul within you time's just a thing you live through baby

all the things that

make me sing are

just songs I'm relearning

there's nothing here I'm earning

I saw the ministers of relevant humanity

trade cards

then were they like those who dream

and I looked into that valley and I knew it would be hard

then were we like those who dream

all the stones that

broke yer bones won't

maim the soul within you

time's just a thing you live through baby

all the things that

make me sing are

just songs I'm relearning

there's nothing here worth earning

I absolutely adore this artist. I guess he played on-label in a eponymously named band called 'Welles' for a while probably 10 years ago, but it never really took off and had a distinctly different sound. Last I checked their most popular song on yt only had ~100k views, most of them significantly less.

That makes it so much more exciting that he's getting so much traction now without a label, and while writing songs that so obviously come from a place of earnest feeling. I saw an interview with him a couple weeks ago where he said he had gone home after touring with his old band and thought he was gonna quit music altogether, but came back to it after his dad had a heart-attack. It's really only been a year since then, writing and playing songs on tiktok/yt until eventually getting enough attention that he put together 2 albums and started selling out shows.

I'm just so hyped for the guy - he played a few shows in my neck of the woods but they sold out so damn fast I wasn't able to see him play. On his new album I really like 'Rocket Man' and 'War is a God', but the whole thing is honestly so good. His other album 'Helles Welles' has all of the more pointed topical songs like 'Fat' and 'Genocide Cake', which are also bangers.

Him being un-signed makes me happy to have bought both of his albums, I can't recommend them enough.

I’d have more respect for your argument if you had something constructive to suggest, rather than simply asserting what you stand against.

I've made several.

The truth is that the Democrats have plenty of options in at least slowing down the rapid growth, but dismiss them out-of-hand simply because they break decorum. Booker just did a 25 hour filibuster (which is awesome), but he wasn't even filibustering a bill. Democrats only seem to want to break decorum when the stakes are low enough not to piss off republican lawmakers, and that's a huge problem when those lawmakers DGAF about democrat reactions and break the law anyway.

This is the time to be raising the alarm and making noise (remember when libs were whining that 16 months before an election was 'not the time' to be protesting democrats?). I don't care about the occasional good thing the dems do in opposition to fascism, I care about all the things they're not doing. They're still acting as if there will still be elections, even though they spent the last 2 years screaming that there won't be any more if trump wins.

At some point they have to start behaving like they actually believe what they've been trying to convince the rest of us of.

It's been said for a while: if you're doing anything remotely questionable (even just attending a protest or meeting with friends to plan one) do not even bring your phone. Even a dumb phone will ping cell towers and record your relative location.

you still aren’t making any actual proposals for what they should be doing

Because what you're looking for is some kind of policy proposal or voting strategy to stop a fascist movement, and I'm telling you that we're beyond that.

Democrats should be physically impeding the dismantling of our institutions - that means disrupting the normal proceedings of congress and the legislature in order to raise the alarm, or at the very least not punishing the members of the party who are, and not breaking the line to side with the republicans when it actually matters (Schumer is the fucking minority leader, not some random spoiler).

When the strategy of the minority leader of the senate is to cooperate with the republicans in tearing apart the government in the hopes that voters blame them for a dip in the stock market 2 years from now and vote them out, it tells their constituents that they don't really believe we're witnessing the end of democracy. One of the top 2028 presidential contenders welcomed a white nationalist onto his podcast to talk about the 'real concerns' with transgender participation in sports. The DNC chair is out in public soliciting donations from "the good billionaires" while the base is setting records rallying against oligarchy.

The democratic party would rather collaborate with the reactionaries in the conservative party than recon with the growing populism in their own base, and that's the entire-fucking point.

Well they sure as fuck shouldn't be capitulating to the fascists

I would expect that someone who really thinks we're at the end of democracy would be (at the very least) breaking decorum to derail the fascism machine before it picks up steam, not censuring their own colleagues for loudly defending what they all presumably believe in.

"What else could they possibly be doing?!" they cry, as ICE agents are pushing legal permanent residents into black vans and flying them to a prison in El Salvador for exercising their 1st amendment rights.

Democrats vote against all the Republican bills

If this were even true (what was Schumer in hot water over again?), what the fuck does 'voting against republican bills' do when the black-shirts are already rounding up immigrants?

Democrats can't run around screaming about the end of democracy for 8 years and then wax romantic about the need for 'bipartisanship' when they're starting to line people up against the wall.

I'm attending the second funeral in as many weeks this weekend for very close childhood friends, and the thing that's getting me is the grief of losing not just those friends, but loss and realization that I'm not even who I was when I knew them anymore

Like I'm kind of choking up now just thinking about it.

It's been a rough month.

Wasn't it Obama that normalized the indiscriminate use of drone strikes in civilian areas without congressional approval?

Democrats are just more competent about their use of military action.

Beyond the publicly known political preference of the mod, I think it's strange that a community on a social media site built on activitypub would have a blanked policy against the posting of other self-published news sources, irrespective of the authors and journalists and their proven reputation.

That said, my take on lemmy moderation has always been JDS, or 'just decentralize, stupid'. We're not reddit, and we don't want to be like reddit, so we shouldn't be going out of our way to centralize communities or complain when we don't like the moderation choices or rules of a community we think ought to be managed differently.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 week ago

The longer I'm on lemmy, the more I realize just how dumb reddit user controls are

When I was on reddit, it seemed to matter so much how old your account was on any given subreddit, but now i realize it's extraordinarily bad opsec to have a single account.

All this to say: there being a single point of authority that can issue IP bans and shadowblocks and generally have control over user identity information is just so needlessly stupid.

Depends on the type of magnesium

All of those subjects of protests are symptomatic of the larger issue (wealth inequality/oligarchy)

The protests you're seeing are the proximal issues people are angry with, but they all share a root cause: oligarchy.

It's important because 'oligarchy' is too abstract for most people to have strong feelings about, but a specific oligarch destroying public services that everybody rely on is extremely salient. While it might feel divided from your perspective, it's still very useful for people to recognize the real ways the capital-'P'-Problem is affecting them.
