Yeah I’ve said this a few times, but honestly anybody who can interact with Lemmy is in the upper tiers of the scale compared with the vast majority of humans who have ever lived.

Obviously that does not mean that individuals cannot have terrible luck and circumstances.

Just install Mint if you’re already planning on ubuntu. It’s basically the same thing under the hood, but with more polish and shine and without Canonical’s junk.

no, no, I’m pretty sure woman is a class and Emma Watson is an object.

I’m going to have to try that game. I played a bunch of the original but I think nothing in between.

In capitalism the goal is to use the money you have now to help you get more money in the future. If you can spend a few million dollars training your workforce or spend a few million buying corrupt politicians, and the latter nets you 10x the return in 1/10 the time, the system will reward those who make the immoral choice. And if you are working for a publicly traded company, your shareholders and board of directors will probably fire you for not using all technically-legal tools at your disposal.

I was recently thinking that the proponents of unregulated capitalism make it sound like natural selection for corporations. And it kind of does sound like that, until you think about it a little bit. It would be like an animal that grows more mouths as it finds more food, and if it eats even more food it can do magic shit like edit its own DNA and warp the laws of physics. Oh and of course it would be immortal, able to die from injury or starvation but never old age. (and if it did die from injury or starvation, it's probably so that its owner can sell its kidneys)

I was thinking of 10^16kg diamond storage inside a larger SSD that’s the size of a large moon, similar to how a real SSD has data stored in tiny little slivers of silicon inside a much much larger device.

I should have explained that one better. It’s easy to imply such details to keep text shorter.

Yeah, no disagreement there.

10^24 is a lot bigger than 6×10^23

Well yeah it’s almost double, but I wrote the comment as a mental estimation of the order of magnitude, so it doesn’t change the substance of the discussion.

I mean at the beginning I arbitrarily picked a number in that 10^40 to 10^44 range and that’s a factor of 1:10,000 rather than 1:2, lol.

If you don’t limit it to valid positions/arrangements it’s like 10^120. Closer to the “number of X in the observable universe” caliber of number.

My eyes almost rolled all the way out of my head reading this article. The dude is from IRAN, and this blindsided them.

To be clear, it sounds like this dude is a loving family man and member of the community, and he did not deserve this. And even if he was a scumbag, we don't use secret police to deal with scumbags.

But sometimes it hurts to have the depth of some people's oblivious ignorance revealed so starkly. Some other comments have already pointed out the stupid "golly I think there might be bad people on the left AND the right!" conclusion at the end of the article. But here's another gem from in the middle:

“My husband himself, even being from Iran, supported Trump, his immigration policies, and understood he was trying to protect the American people and was praying he helped free the Iranian people,” Gardner told Newsweek.

These people look at an elderly hateful narcissist of a grifter and parasite, and hear his messages of hate and division and exclusion, and apparently the image formed in their dusty brains is Captain Fucking Planet!

It was far too recent for somebody with my background. I learned how the UNIX command line was different from DOS in the late 90s, but it was only last year that I switched from a VM to a native Linux install at work. Then I swapped over the home PCs during winter.

After defaulting to Windows for so long because of games and employers favoring it, it was almost frustrating how fast, smooth, and "clean" feeling it was to install Linux natively on a system compared with the recent versions of Windows. And that's without any special lightweight distro. I am a proud Linux Mint Cinnamon user, lol.
