Came prepared to downvote this for being common sense, but judging by the comments it actually is surprisingly unpopular! Well played.

Somehow genuinely had no idea Gojira were French so, TIL!

Also wtf South Africa.

Got this through our letterbox yesterday. What sort of supernatural powers do we think they're talking?

I did always quite fancy the power of invisibility when I was younger although nowadays I'd probably pick teleportation. Not sure where "supernatural power" ends and "superhero power" begins, though πŸ€”

Maybe this is more like the ability to be slightly see-through and float 6 inches off the ground. Which I guess is still cool in its own way.

I feel like most Saturday TV from my childhood wouldn't hold up, but in my mind at least Gladiators was the exception! Really hope they don't ruin it.

(17:50, BBC1 for the unaware)

I hope you spent some time wearing them on your fingers first, as is tradition.

[–] TeaHands@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Nice! I won't get too excited yet because it's a big project but if they can make even a halfway decent app it would really change things up.

β€˜Bough’ and β€˜bow’ are pronounced the same

Except, of course, when "bow" is pronounced "bow" instead.

Just don't ever set foot in Brazil, ok got it.

Is this a thing that happens? Do I need to add it to my list of reasons I'm terrified of the sea?

Haven't been feeling well this week so I took the opportunity to log into the game for the first time in years. Maybe Past Me knew when she logged out that it was going to be for a while, because she made sure I was in a lovely spot for the sunrise when I came back!

Happy to see Laurelin server is still going strong, I've been pottering around it on and off for 12 years now and still never even made it to Moria due to spending all my time farming, smoking pipe-weed on the roof of my hobbit house, and back in the day playing quite a lot of creep and RP-selling dyes in Bree when I should've been levelling instead πŸ˜…

That's my Christmas break game sorted, anyway. Do they still do the Yule festival?

Went down with a mysterious cough on Tuesday night. Seemed like just a bad cold Wednesday, got worse and added dizziness to the mix Thursday, now today the dizziness is gone (hooray) but whatever I've got has changed tack and is trying out severe nausea on me instead (booo).

Was supposed to be out tomorrow with a friend I've not seen since August. Not impressed.

So while I spend the next few days swooning around the house complaining about it like an actual child, I'd love to hear some happy things to focus on instead!

Weekend plans, amusing anecdotes, promises to avenge me should I not make it through, jokes at my expense, all equally welcome. For the love of god just distract me 😭

Plus switching from the subscription model to a one-time fee for commercial PC-only license. Nice.

I enjoyed this part of the announcement:

We have seen other platforms making awkward moves with their pricing and terms, so we thought, what if we did the opposite

I wonder who they could possibly be referencing πŸ€”

First pub, two drinks, Β£10.70. Ouch, we thought. But that must just be what it costs round there nowadays.

Second pub, literally round the corner. Same two drinks came to Β£6 something.

I'm trying to be normal today and do my actual job instead of falling into a hyperfixated rabbithole of how pubs work and how they can possibly be so different despite being in essentially the same location and about the same size. But I can't get it out of my mind!

Both of them had dogs in, so it can't be that. The more expensive one was much more brightly lit, so maybe pub-grade lightbulbs are very expensive? πŸ€”

Any subject-matter experts hanging about who can put me out of my misery?

Reposting from a couple days ago:

I'm legally obliged to shill the various crafting communities, my two most used are !knitting@lemmy.world and !lemmy_stitch@sh.itjust.works but you can find lots more in the sticky thread in either of those.

Then there's also !imadethis@lemm.ee which has been a bit quiet lately so if you've made something, go show it off!

You may or may not have heard of the gross Android 14 bug currently affecting people with multiple user accounts on their phone. I'm in this picture, hi, this is me.

When I heard about the bug, I stopped using the second profile and everything seemed to be fine. A narrow escape, right?!

Alas, no.

This morning I saw something vaguely amusing, and thought "my friends at UKCasual will chortle quietly at this". Tried to take a photo...camera crashed. And again. And that's apparently it! I now have no access to storage on my phone and am left hoping Google come up with a fix asap.

Not even going to tell you what the amusing photo was, so ner.

How's your day going? 😩

Usually coats $19.95.

I slept for most of this offer apparently but it's still available for nine and a half hours as of time of posting! You can claim it with your Itch account then download it later.

As the man himself says, "Get all my game assets in a single bundle, great for learning new engines πŸ‘€"

I see Sir PTerry, I upvote.

And hey, just sliding this totally smoothly into the conversation, did you all know we have !discworld@lemmy.ml (Lemmy / Kbin)

*sidles out awkwardly*

Oh lord, ok now things make a lot more sense πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

Can I ask how you were "introduced" to .world? Just been wondering why that's the one everyone is moving to atm.

Running an instance definitely does help, but the problem is convincing people your small instance is competently run and there to stay.

For people unable to selfhost, ways to help include:

  • Making posts and comments, especially in smaller "dead" communities. Preferably about things other than Reddit.
  • Contributing fixes on GitHub
  • If you're unable to do that last one, contributing quality reproducible bug reports on GitHub (rather than in, say, instance-specific meta communities)
  • Helping to answer questions from all the confused new Lemmings, yes a lot of them are asked repeatedly but we want people to learn and stay so be polite and patient.
  • Making sure people know about finding communities through sites like lemmyverse.net
  • Curating lists of related communities and approaching mods to have it stickied or added to their community sidebar (helps people navigate around within their niche interests)
  • Going to the extra effort of including local links when you mention a community, so people can find their way directly to the subscribe button. Example: !crochet@lemmy.ca (Lemmy / Kbin)
  • And of course, shitposting memes.

Ok fine I'll start. Got married recently, it was about as stressful and mortifying as any such form of public performance, so I'd made my new husband agree we could get a Greggs immediately after the ceremony to stop me feeling sick.

We rocked up into the queue as a party of ten, me still holding a ridiculous bouquet, most of our friends looking self-conscious in their wedding finery.

Woman at the till gave us our cheese savoury stotties for free by way of congratulations, and the guy working in the back claimed it was the "Northernest thing" he'd ever seen. I have never been more proud.

(worked a treat to settle my nervy stomach for the rest of the day, as well)

Ok so I watch a lot of devlog videos, and talk to a lot of wannabe devs on Discord (definitely not using "wannabe" as an insult there, it applies to me too!) and there's this concept of a dream game that keeps coming up.

I've been playing video games since the 1980s and yeah, there are always improvements I'd love to one day see in every genre I play. But this idea of having a specific dream game is just entirely foreign to me. There are way too many possibilities to have just one dream!

My first attempt at a real game, I quickly found out it was going to be way too big and way too far above my current skill level. So I just...dropped it. Yeah I might go back one day, it would make for a cool game, but beyond that I'm not super attached.

So basically my question is, how common is this attitude among game devs? Do you all have a specific dream "one day" game in the back of your mind? Or maybe you're already working on it? Or are you like me and you just enjoy making games in general?

It was my bday last week and I was desperate for a good old fashioned lemon top. Alas, even though they sell those at basically every seaside town on the coast of NE England, we apparently picked the exception.

Got this lemon swirl as a backup and it was pretty good, ngl. It was no lemon top though, I'm still a bit salty a week later.
