I know you are just nitpicking on whether the current dictatorship has an official policy to deport American citizens, but I want to clarify, for the benefit of anyone else who might not be aware of this, that the American government has in fact already deported multiple American citizens by mistake. This GAO investation found that while ICE doesn't keep track of such stats, based on the data that is available it must report that indeed "ICE and CBP took enforcement actions against some U.S. citizens." The numbers are in the hundreds-arrests-per-year range, and dozens-per-year deportations. There are many interviews in the press with American citizens who say they were illegally detained or deported. Some Americans had to sneak back across the border after being illegally deported. Many Americans sued and won settlements for their illegal deportations, so now it is official court record that such events happened.

This is not just a matter of ambiguity, cases of "who can really know whether that person was a citizen or not". These are cases where CBP has been clearly negligent, where the victims had been able to procure for display real birth certificates, real passports, and the agents wouldn't look at them. The court-appointed lawyers would "lose" the documents and claim none were received in front of the judge, or there would not even be court hearings at all, just deportations. When sued later, no one would take responsibility, no one reprimanded, just settlements paid out. Sometimes the CBP would get sued, receive a court judgement affirming that the victim was a citizen who was unlawfully deported, then ignore the judgement and deport them again. This has all already happened... under past administrations. The implication is that the willful negligence under the current one will not get better.

I like to imagine the origin of life as some organic scum sloshing around in a tidal wavepool. The evaporation creates concentration, the soapy foam provides compartmentalization. The bubbles merge and break apart, hosting populations of spontaneously-polymerizing goo. With enough time and luck, you get some randomly-formed polymer that is able to catalyze more polymerization. From there natural selection takes over. Sometime later the polymers learn how to stabilize their own bubbles, so they are not at the mercy of the waves any longer. This keeps the other random polymers out, such that when the auto-catalytic polymers catalyze more polymerization, they create more copies of themselves rather than of random junk. This is hugely advantageous to their population numbers, so that if such bubble stabilization can happen at all, it will happen and then dominate.

In this fantasy it is difficult to point to any single bubble and say "This, this is the first cell." It's all just a bunch of foam seething, forming and reforming. The polymers keep mixing and separating. To draw a line at one is as arbitrary as to say "This, this is the first chicken, born of an egg, laid by a bird-like creature who is not a chicken" to solve the chicken-and-egg problem. There could be thousands of generations of chicken-like creatures, any one as good a pretender to be the first as another.

There are thousands of bubbles, no single moment of transition between non-life, proto-life, and cellular life, but I do believe they have to come from around the same time and the same wavepool. There isn't some other wavepool from a hundred million years later that completely independently grew its own bubbles and resulted in a separate line of universal descent that later got merged into the tree of life. It happened on Earth once, so it could have happened again in a hundred million years... EXCEPT that now that it has happened, the existing life would colonize the entire planet and eat up all the organic goo molecules as quickly as they become available. Proto-life cannot outcompete full-life.

I like this cosmology calculator: https://www.astro.ucla.edu/~wright/CosmoCalc.html Enter redshift z=1100 (which is the observed redshift of the CMB) and hit the "general" button, which calculates the distances using the currently-accepted general model and Hubble parameter/dark matter/dark energy values. This gives the "comoving radial distance" of 45.5 Gly (giga light years). That means that if right now, at this very instant, you put down a meter stick in front of you, and the buddy next to you put down a meter stick, and the buddy next to them, and so on through the next galaxy, and every galaxy, all the way to the place where the CMB in that direction originally came from (the place is still there and there is probably a galaxy there now though there wasn't one back then), there will be 45 billion light years worth of meter sticks.

The other values of note are the light travel time of 13.72 Gyr (travel time is how distances are usually reported in news articles, as opposed to scientific articles that only report the redshift z), and the age of the universe at the time the light was emitted: 0.37 My = 370000 years, which is the age when recombination happened. The total age of the universe (13.721 Gyr) is the sum of these two.

The value you probably want is the "angular size distance" in the calculator, which is the meter-stick method done in the moment when the light was emitted rather than at the moment right now. In this case the distance is 0.0413 Gly. Only 41 million light years, really close by! There was a lot of stuff packed together, but it has stretched out since. The relationship between the two distances is:

comoving distance = angular-size distance * (z + 1)

So redshift of 1100 means the spacing has been made 1101x times wider.

Of course if the universe were literally stationary then your question wouldn't make sense because the universe would never cool down and CMB would not happen. If the universe expansion had stopped at the moment the CMB happened, then the distance to the CMB you want is the 13.72 Gly travel time distance, but it wouldn't be our CMB anymore, it would be some other last scattering surface much farther out away.

Exactly right! The desire on display in this snow path is the desire for more space/safer lane width tolerances. The handlebars on my bike alone are more than 2 feet wide, I literally cannot fit in the quarter-lane as designated!

There's been talk for several years of repurposing the mirror traffic lane on the other side of the bridge for exclusive pedestrian use, which would solve this. Both lanes were originally streetcar tracks when the bridge was first built, then converted into car lanes and remained so for decades. The car lane still in use on the opposite side is hardly even used because the un-expandable 8 feet is narrower than standard lane width. Trucks and larger cars can't fit there, almost all motor vehicle traffic goes through the interior bridge lanes instead. Yet for years the city resisted the switch. Showing desire is important to win them over.

I do have good news to report for accuracy's sake: after several more snowfalls during the winter, the many bridge paths did get salted every time afterwards, and this scene did not repeat. Must have been an aberration!

For something like a browser, you don't even need to "install" at all. You only need to acquire the standalone/portable executable from the browser developer's official website. For example you get Waterfox from https://www.waterfox.net/download/. If you read the PKGBUILD, even if you can't see through all the potential malicious tricks you'll at least find that that's basically all it claims to do: download a binary from official website and put it somewhere. In this case "installing" means using root permissions to stick it in /usr/bin, so all users on the computer can run it. But since almost all home computers only have a single user, you can skip having to give it (temporary) root access by saving it in your home directory instead. I also run the binary inside its own Firejail so it doesn't even have access to my personal files. You are always trusting someone, be it the Arch maintainers, the AUR contributors, or the independent browser developers, but this way the least number of parties get the least number of permissions.

 

Bicycle/pedestrian path on the Queensboro Bridge in New York City. The two trenches are worn entirely by bicycle tire traffic. These are not car tracks as the width slightly varies later. The city has done zero effort to clean the bridge paths after the snow and almost zero effort to clean protected street bicycle paths. The intended use for this path is for pedestrians to be on the right half (you can see the middle dividing white line if you look for it), and for bicyclists to use the left two quarters. You can notice the yellow line intended to divide the two directions of bicycle traffic, with about 2ft per direction. The actual spacing resulting from natural use is on display and apparently way different.

It is important to remember that, unless accompanied by convincing evidence for selective advantage, any single inheritable trait is more likely to have arisen from genetic drift, not from natural selection! There is, in my opinion, too much focus on conversation about superficial phenotypic traits like "shape of the nose" this and "angle of the eye" that, all the arguments about how one is better than another. Could the asiatic epicanthic fold give advantage against icy winds? Maaaybe... But it doesn't even have to. What about the asiatic dry earwax gene? You'd struggle to even come up with a story of how dry earwax or wet earwax is actually better under certain conditions, or you could just say "it's a single nucleotide polymorphism that could have spread by genetic drift" and be done.

Very few human traits have definitely been naturally selected for: light skin in non-sunny climates for better vitamin D production, sickle cell gene for malaria resistance, lactase persistence for animal milk consumption. Even there, the estimated selective advantage is actually much smaller than you'd expect: lactose tolerance confers only something like 1% advantage! There are many more possible neutral mutations than advantageous ones, and each one has a chance to be fixed in the entire population by genetic drift, meaning that any widespread human trait that is less clearly advantageous than lactose tolerance is more likely to be neutral than advantageous at all.

Even mildly disadvantageous mutations can be fixed by genetic drift, especially in humans since we have had many bottlenecks and founder effects. There was an area in Appalachia populated by blue-skinned people due to founder effect. No one is going to try to argue how having blue skin was actually advantageous for them to blend into their environment! There is an area in Dominican Republic with a very high rate of children born intersex, again due to a founder effect mutation. They are not considered exceptional and live normal lives as their culture has adapted to treat them as routine, as a kind of third gender. But they are not some kind of new level of human evolution, an adaptation for an intersectional era!

The only mutations that definitely cannot spread by genetic drift are those that definitely kill you.

 

Needed a replacement 700C front wheel for my commuter bike after the old aluminum rim exploded like a looney tunes cannon. It's hard enough to find the right size when there are 3 competing tire/rim sizing systems currently in use, it doesn't help when the people selling the wheels have no idea what the numbers mean either! All of these examples are from separate storefronts at the big online store. Ended up buying the wheel identical to mine from my local bicycle shop at the same price as online and with no shipping fee or delivery time.

The 3 systems in use are the American customary inch fraction notation like 26x1+3⁄4 (which is NOT interchangeable with American customary inch decimal notation like 26x1.75), the French metric notation like 650x45C, and the ISO 5775 metric notation like 47-571. I found the wikipedia conversion tables and Sheldon Brown's tire size chart invaluable.

The recent post made me fear that a lot of you are taking this "monkey looks at double-slits" meme, which was only ever supposed to be a funny monkey meme, actually seriously. Honorable mention goes to @[email protected], whose 12 posts on the topic, insisting that the quantum eraser experiment (but not the delayed-choice quantum eraser!) proves that the double slit is somehow bizarre, forced me to make my own meme. This meme explains the (non-delayed choice) quantum eraser paper from arXiv:quant-ph/0106078 and the figures are numbered to reference the paper.

First of all, looking at the photons, you the conscious intelligent monkey, MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. You can't actually "see" the photons going through a slit the way you could see say a bowling ball. The only way to detect a photon is to absorb or reflect it, and if the photon is getting absorbed by your eye that means it's not going through the slit or hitting the screen. The interference pattern stays visible on the screen WHETHER OR NOT YOU LOOK AT IT.

They've lied to you when they said the pattern changes when you "look" at which slit it the photon goes through. What the physicists actually do to measure the "which path" information is they put these circular polarizer filters in front of the slits, one clockwise one counterclockwise. Then the pattern disappears and you get this one single blob of density (Not even double! Figure 3). This is because light polarized in opposite directions cannot interfere with itself - wikipedia calls this the "Fresnel–Arago laws". In principle you could have put a polarization detector in place of the screen and record which way the light hitting it is polarized, which would tell you which slit the photon must have went through. The physicists DON'T EVEN BOTHER DOING IT. The fact alone that the light is polarized when it hits the screen is sufficient to destroy the interference pattern.

Well, NO SHIT. You put these giant 3D glasses in front of the slits and you still expect to see interference? This is very much a "mechanical interaction", not some "non-obtrusive conscious observation". Everything that destroys coherence will ruin your quantum experiment! Mystery solved!

So what about the quantum eraser, @kromem will ask? Popular science has created this myth that you can look at the screen and you can make the interference pattern literally shimmer in and out of existence by just flipping a switch, connected to second detector positioned elsewhere, turning it off and on. An action at a distant place (the detector POL1 observing "twinned" entangled photons created by this fancy nonlinear barium crystal before the slits, Figure 1) changes whether light over here behaves as a particle or a wave, right in front of your eyes. Spooky action at a distance, right?

THIS FUCKING DOESN'T HAPPEN. The monkey will see the single blob from Figure 3 and only single blob, no matter whether it turns the second detector on or off! The interference pattern will NEVER shimmer back into existence. The light never switches between behaving like a wave and behaving like a particle. It always behaves the same way, all the time, everywhere in the universe - like fucking light!

So what do the physicists actually fucking mean when they say the interference pattern is "restored"? If you observe the photons hitting the screen one at a time and you correlate them with simultaneous detections at detector POL1, you can mark those events as either "yes coincidence" category A or "no coincidence" category B. If you look at just all the category A events (Figure 4) you will see an interference pattern, and just category B you will see another (Figure 5). You cannot see these patterns by eye on the screen! You have to use a computer to record the events individually and separate them, you will only ever see a single blob by eye. The two interference patterns are subsets of that blob. They were always part of it, their hills and valleys mesh together into a single continuum. NO ONE EVER FUCKING EXPLAINED THIS.

The detector POL1 has a linear polarizer filter in front of it, so straight out the gate it will not see 50% of the twinned photons at all, because they will get stuck in the filter. Your category A can never match more than 50% of events. It gets worse, since the non-linear crystal in reality has very low efficiency and most photons going through are not twinned, so you cannot measure category B directly. In the experiment they do it by rotating the filter 90°, which changes the correlation to category B. In the meme I show them as if the crystal was 100% efficient.

The delayed-choice quantum eraser works similarly - you only ever see a single blob and can never see the interference pattern shimmer in and out of existence. You need the correlation data from the second detector to split the blob into two intermeshed interference patterns using a computer. The Sabine video was the first one I've ever seen that explains this correctly. Every other popular science video up to that point has lied to me!

Whatever you do, DO NOT watch the DR. QUANTUM video with an open mind! (Not even going to link to it, @manual3204 linked it in the other thread.) It's from a documentary produced by a literal UFO cult to promote their quantum woo woo, only masquerading as a quirky science video. It came out in the early days of youtube, when its production and animation quality were unusually high for its time, so it immediately became youtube's go-to video for double slit experiment. Copies of it remain highly ranked there even to present day. It's total baloney!

The poster is just submitting the article as titled, and the scientists are just making cool observations not bothering anyone. The fault for clickbait lies solely with the journalists/editors. I wish instead of continuing the practice from that other site of "submission title must match article title", we normalize the culture of writing our own plain language de-clickbait-ified titles, the way HackerNews does it.

What a disgusting clickbait title 🤮. The comet is not "racing towards Earth" any more than say Mars is (and Mars comes closer to Earth than this comet will). Maybe some day we'll live in a world where journalists do not sensationalize headlines with a mix of Deep Impact and The Ninth Gate, but today is not that day.

 

Everyone is armed all the time and that's normal, but to draw a weapon is an overt hostile act. A standoff therefore is a game of chicken because both want to kill each other and you want to draw first to have the highest chance of surviving, but even a bandit will hesitate to add a felony murder charge to their rap sheet. The whole town serves as witness when there is a pair of eyes behind every shuttered window. The hero always draws second, both demonstrating his superior skill and speed by defeating the opponent even at a disadvantage, and getting away with murder scot-free.

Btw, old reddit used to display the exact upvote/downvote counts ("x upvoted, y downvoted") for posts AND comments in the "title" attribute of the total number, visible as a tooltip when hovering the mouse over it. All that "x% upvoted it" for posts and removing the counts entirely for comments was nonsense pushed through by the previous reddit jerk CEO on 2014-06-18 against all community opposition (what is it with reddit and dumping unpopular changes in June?).

If you gonna recreate old reddit, please do not include these later CEO meddlings in it! One of the best features of lemmy is the display of exact counts (which was also a major advertised draw of voat.com and raddle.me before it). Let's keep that in!
