I remember when I Ran by Flock of Seagulls was randomly playing in my head so I decided to listen to it. YouTube took that as me finding a new favourite band. I mostly listen to industrial metal.

In Central Helsinki, Finland they had an idea to put solar panels on the roofs. They decided not to, because it "ruined the rooftop view". So, maybe something similar?

Used to be that when a play ended, the audience would rush the stage to pat the backs of the actors to show appreciation. After the Great Audience Stampede of 1733, they made a rule to not rush the stage and just use the other hand as a substitute of the actors' backs. That rule became the social norm.

No not use any DLC equipment. While the combat in the game is far from perfect, using the viper gear (I think that's what it's called) ruins it further.

DOOM Eternal is pretty damn close to perfection. The only thing that keeps it from 10/10 for me is the length of the missions, especially on harder difficulties. I feel absolutely exhausted after just one level.

Then again, maybe I'm just old.

Yeah, it does look promising but knowing Valve time it'll release sometime in the 2030s.

TL;DR: Any recommendations for a game like Overwatch that actually functions? XDefiant was promising, but it doesn't have "roles" that don't require shooting, so my friend got frustrated.

As it turns out, it is actually possible to make friends as an adult. Who knew?

She likes MOBAs and such, and I mostly go for shooters so Overwatch was an obvious choice.

The gameplay is fun, and it gives us both something we enjoy, but there are some glaring issues that are best described by just describing my own experience in the game.

First off, the game requires you to win 50 matches in quick play before you're allowed in ranked. With both of us working full-time, having spouses and whatnot, and dealing with 3 random teammates, that took forever.

I finally got to ranked, she already had a rank. The game "predicted" my rank to be basically the same as hers. Even so, all that's available are "wide matches". Average wait time is between 20-30 minutes.

So we started a co-op campaign in Baldur's Gate 3.

We still would like to find a competitive game to play together, so basically a functional Overwatch.

And that brings us here. Any ideas?

So, how's the fully autonomous car coming along?

Some legend also typed out lyrics to Sandstorm.

I've been working as an automation technician for around 5 years now, and I've come across several services that promise a substantial improvement in energy efficiency when it comes to heating, especially involving district heating with water. Most of these are subscription services.

While they usually quote numbers that are based in reality, the way they are accomplished is often covered in technical jargon and straight up BS that a person without experience won't be able to understand and so believes the seller.

That's where this post comes in.

All that the impressive sounding, weather pattern considering, ultra-futuristic solution really does is take the existing setpoint for the heating system and lowers it by ≈2°C. That's it. One line of code. Takes any competent professional 5 minutes to implement. What's worse, some systems are laid on top of the old one, with a higher priority. Meaning that you need a specialist provided by the "optimization" company to adjust the heating. So if you're too cold or too hot, tough shit. Your building's maintenance company can't change it.

The existing system in most cases already bases its setpoints on the current outside temperature, with a pollrate of around a second. What the weather is going to be like next week, or even tomorrow, does not matter. The system already adjusts the setpoints in real time.

Maybe a bit of a niche rant, but hopefully helps at least someone. Thanks for reading!

Yeah, it's really fun to watch her play because she doesn't play like I do. I mean that I naturally go for dex/quality, and she just wants heavy armour, a big shield and a bonking stick. This is why ER is so good, both ways are valid and fun.

Recently, my girlfriend got interested in Elden Ring, and I'm trying to give her some advice. She doesn't have much experience in gaming, mostly chill games like Stardew Valley and such.

I'm afraid I'll scare her off if I monologue about i-frames, poise damage and parry windows, so: People whose first FromSoft experience was Elden Ring, what advice did you find actually usable for getting into the game?

Are you actually comparing paying for healthcare, infrastructure and social security to military service? That's pretty ridiculous and I think you know it.

Mandatory military service is absolutely not necessary for the sake of society. In Norway, for example, around 80% are released from service and it's doing quite alright. Sweden is doing fine, too and only a portion of eligible people are actually called in.

And you're just glossing over the fact that the overwhelming majority in Finland would still serve if it wasn't mandatory, according to polls the willingness to serve has never really dropped.

And regarding the civilian service, I went there. It's a year for everyone, instead of 6 months minimum for the military. You also get paid the same as the fresh recruits in the military, which is simply not enough for a civilian. You try living with the day wage if you don't believe me. And that pay is for a 40h work week. Those conditions are in places worse than the conditions in open prisons, like in Suomenlinna for example. So civilian service is in essence a prison sentence.

I am not against military service. I am against MANDATORY military service. Do you honestly think that giving people a choice is a bad thing? That making people choose between learning to kill and obey or going to jail is justified? Or do you think that the majority of young people wouldn't serve if it wasn't mandatory? Please.

The only purpose of a mandatory military service like where I live is to teach young people to obey authority without question. That somehow makes you "a real man".
