I got started on Dragonball, but I don't know if it's recommendable as someone's first anime? On one hand, it's so popular and so influential on so many anime that came after, it helped me familiarise myself with the tropes and stuff, but on the other hand, it's too long and could be intimidating for new people. I guess Detective Conan and One Piece for the same reason. Something that says all it wants to say in about 30 episodes seems like a better first anime.

Assassination Classroom!. It starts off so goofy and cartoony, and as it goes on, it contextualises all of its silliness in the universe it's built, and by the ending, well, it was the first time I had to leave a room full of friends to go cry my eyes out

I'm sure I'll get dunked on for shilling for Ubisoft, but my god, is the original Rayman trilogy good! Rayman, Rayman 2, and Rayman 3 are some of the most imaginative, creative, funny, and just plain well-made games I've ever played!

If you're understandably not into Ubisoft, try Darwinia, a fun retro-looking RTS game, and the Croc remake, with Croc 2 getting remade just around the corner!

Fantastic, may the paperwork phase bring through some nice improvements!

This December it's Great Western Rail! Literally anything would be an improvement over what rail's been since COVID!

The phone is a Fairphone 3, and the provider is Lebara (I don't think it exists outside the UK, but there you go)

I've been on Ubuntu Touch for a couple of months now! I'm enjoying it so far

Certainly, but I am curious as to what a Debrid service is, and how it can be made DMCA-resistant

Oh, I should also mention it'll all be open source coding, so if that doesn't get Lemmites excited, I don't know what will!

After like the 5th website I was using got taken down while I've been trying to watch Detective Conan, I might have just been ground down to the point of paying for anime rather than pirating it. I would just buy the DVDs obviously, but at 1,200 episodes, I don't see myself justifying the price of it!

Something I had never really noticed was just how American-dominated the whole anime streaming service scene is. Not just Crunchyroll, but Tubi, Hulu, Peacock, Sling TV, everything! If you're interested in buying European, you might find One Piece on BBC iPlayer or something, but we have pretty much nothing dedicated specifically for anime.

But that's why I'm excited to have discovered Serika, a Dutch anime-specialising streaming service that's in progress atm! If there are any anime fans in this community, give them some love!

Thanks I'll give it a go!

Edit: that didn't work either :(

I can't speak on behalf of him, but all my old CD-ROM games from the late 90's and early 2000s don't work on Linux, even with Wine. I'd love to get them working one day, so I'm watching this thread

Basically as the title asks. It looks like the .wtf instance is down again, and I'm starting to think more seriously about hosting my own instance. I imagine I'd have to pay for the domain name, and for a server to host it, but are there any Peertube instance hosters that can confirm if there are other costs involved?

Edit: Looks like the .wtf instance is back up, so thanks to the admin for that! However I'd still take any advice I can get on setting up an instance in case it's needed

I'm a bit of an environmentalist at the best of times, but pretty much anyone can agree that driving into London is not the best way to get there. From the traffic, to the congestion charge, to the expensive parking.

I've always been driving to Thornhill Park and Ride near Oxford, and taking that into London, but at about £35 on the day, I think I could do better. I would take the train, but that's about double the price from where I am!

What do you guys do when you have to go to London? Do you have any secrets for getting there cheaply? This question will probably vary depending on where you guys are in the UK, but I think it'd be interesting to hear a variety of strategies anyway!

(spoiler warning)

I feel really stupid for having to ask this after seeing the Gurren Lagann recap movies, but what exactly is this "Spiral Power" that the show starts referring to in its second half? Throughout the whole anime, the main character Simone's favourite weapon is a drill, so in a literal sense, he's physically using the power of a spiral to fight.

But as the show goes on, it's revealed that humans are "spiral beings", meaning they're capable of using spiral power, among other spiral beings in the multiverse. Drills can shoot lasers as part of their spiral power, creatures that hang out with spiral beings can withhold spiral power of their own, and the main antagonists fear that the use of spiral power will lead to the destruction of the universe??

Was there an explanation to this that I totally missed or something? Is spiral power still something that comes primarily from Simone's drill? Is it more of a Dragonball-style energy wave that you're not supposed to think too hard about? Does it refer to the spiralling power upgrades that the characters go through, and it's meant to be a metaphor for humanity's ability to self-improve? Does it not really matter in an anime that's more about the character's ability to break through anything with sheer testosterone and willpower? Is it all meant to be left up to interpretation? I swear, I've seen this anime twice and now the recap movies too, and I STILL have no idea what it's about!

RIP Rob Grant (lemmy.world)

To those who don't know, Rob Grant - one of Red Dwarf's two main writers - passed away recently on the 25th February. He had co-written every episode of Red Dwarf for the first six series. Rob had also worked on Spitting Image in the 80s and had written several Red Dwarf novels, including one that is set to be released on July of this year. Look out for Red Dwarf: Titan.

Rest in peace you genius! It's better to have loved and lost, than to have listened to an album by Olivia Newton-John

It's been down for me for a day now with a 502 Bad Gateway error, citing an openresty (nginx) issue. Is this an OSA-related regional thing to the UK, or is it down for everyone else too? It'd suck if it's permanently down because I have a channel on there.
