I’m sorry you had to deal with that as a kid.

Ew, the author of this wrote about children being taught “critical race theory” like that’s a thing.

I grew up rurally in the south, so I was raised around guns by default. The adult men in my family had at least 3 or 4 guns each, and I’m probably low balling. I got a BB gun around 7 or 8 years old, I loved shooting cans and got really accurate. I kind of got bored of it over time, I don’t own any guns now and haven’t shot anything larger than a BB gun in decades.

Most of my family does hunt, though. It’s a nice break on the grocery bill if you have the patience for it and a good place to do it. A truck isn’t necessary but it’s definitely a lot easier than shoving a dead deer in a car trunk.

Hmm… microplastics or flu and herpes… school didn’t prepare me for these decisions.

Yeah, you stand next to one of those things and you understand animism.

Okay for anyone who is fried at the moment like I am, map-wiki IS NOT ABOUT GEOGRAPHY.

If you read the rest of the comment they’re not saying that being gay is inherently political. Queer as an identity is definitely political, it stems from activists reclaiming it in the 80s and 90s. The “we’re here, we’re queer, get used to it” chant didn’t come out of thin air.

Using queer a synonym for gay or lesbian is a great way to shove your foot in your mouth by calling someone queer when they don’t identify with that term.

My bad, I thought you were talking about the post I linked.

Do you have hard water? That can make it more difficult to cook legumes to a creamier texture. If you think this might be the culprit, you can soak your peas in salty water or use water from a filter.

I saw this account reblogged someone who said basically she didn’t like penis and if that made her a terf then okay

~~Whoa, that is not what that link showed. What it showed was her reblogging a post that called trans women sex entitled incel men.~~

Different post, my bad!

I can co-sign this if we can agree that some types of ‘disagreements’ don’t belong on the fediverse, a la the Nazi bar problem.

The whole article is worth reading, but to report rent gouging to the CA attorney general:

Fill out this form at the state attorney general’s website. The form isn’t anonymous; it asks for the information of the person reporting. There’s also a hotline you can call: 1 (800) 952-5225.

I got this email from the NHM:

For Our Community

We are holding all of you in our hearts during this devastating time for Los Angeles.

Based on the information we have now, we are pleased to offer free general admission at the Natural History Museum and La Brea Tar Pits & Museum through Friday, January 17. We hope our museums can serve as spaces of respite, offering comfort and connection with our natural and cultural worlds, while also providing enjoyable and engaging indoor experiences.

Please see our NHM and La Brea Tar Pits websites for more information and how to plan a visit.

In the wake of these devastating fires, we understand that many Los Angeles children are unable to attend school. In addition to the free educational experiences at our museums, we have collaborated with L.A. County Parks & Recreation to bring our Mobile Museums to community parks that are providing emergency youth camps this coming week. We are also welcoming many students from impacted communities to our museums for field trips.

The health and safety of our staff and visitors remains our top priority. We will continue to assess the situation day by day.

Did this scare the absolute shit out of anyone else? 😅

There are roughly 13,000 acres on fire within 20 miles of me (and about 10 million other people). Fortunately since I have asthma we already have 2 air purifiers that are running full blast.

Probably the scariest part of how toxic the air is right now is that it looks absolutely clear outside. Without checking the weather I would have never known it was that bad.

Taken along the LA River. I didn’t get a good picture, but I also saw a male and female hooded merganser pair, along with more wigeons, coots, and grackles than you could shake a stick at.

It should show up on the site with the discount automatically, but if it doesn't the discount code is BIKEYEAR25

If you don't already have a helmet, this one is $20 and rated on par with more expensive helmets by Consumer Reports.

You can also ride for free with Metro Micro or on Metro bikes by entering a code: Ring25

Free rides end at 3 am on Jan 1st, so take advantage of it!
