I must state I lack any experience with parenting, but I have this to add:

Both Android and iOS have parental controls built in, just block whatever you don't want your kid to access. There are tools out there that parents can install on devices that are basically spyware for their kids. Parents have to actually use the existing tools, at least what is built in with the OS of the device. Make the iPad not an addictive content serving machine, but instead something with hand picked games, or whatever other apps you trust. Even non tech savvy users could enable parental features.

I noticed that local communities and posts within don't show up at all when you are unauthenticated, and they are basically exclusive to users of that instance. It makes me wonder if there are hidden exclusive gems only you have access to across various instances.

What are some of your favorite local only communities?

When you get big enough, you are under more scrutiny and these laws are spreading more and more. I can imagine the Mastodon team is under lots of external pressure to start following these new laws. Mastodon won't be the last to start thinking about implementation.

I hope it's face verification so I can just point the camera at a guy on Google images or whatever to get it to let me in.

I got a big ass HDD I can store it all in if need be.

The devs never patched the infinite money glitch.

Does it cache stuff, or is it a simple image proxy? My goal is to compress and store all external images. If an instance goes down, all is not lost as a copy would still be in my server.

We are heading towards the unknown, seemingly with no brakes. Our fate now more than ever truly is up in the air. What do you think life will be like in the future?

That explains the "sync" logs I've been seeing! Is sync a good user experience?

We cooked chat.

I haven't had my shit up for very long, and HOLY SHIT the unique visitors numbers are nuts. I think this is because of federation, but mainly the images being loaded across other instances.

I looked at deflect and it ain't gonna be cheap, the number will only go up, and I am the sole user of the site. Storing the shit in a media bucket or whatever would fix it, but I'd have to pay for that shit too.

I believe so, I took the screenshot a while ago so my memory is hazy.

So, Tiktok keeps tabs on what is searched after viewing a video, and many users had no idea what the constitution was so they searched it up with Tiktok enough for it to show a hyperlink when opening the comments.

Both Lemmy.world and my server rely upon Cloudflare for SSL, DDOS protection, CDN services, etc. I use it to provide me with a Cloudflare tunnel to get around not being able to forward ports.

Outages have put this dependance to question, and the same with recent news about the US government obtaining data through subpoenas. It’s a free service that takes care of many of the difficulties when it comes to hosting your service online, but everyone knows that free is not free.

What do you all think about Cloudflare?
