An exciting development, but the drug affects the body’s use of Vitamin A so I think they need more studies looking for non-reproductive side effects.

Night blindness and immune dysfunction are associated with vitamin A deficiency.

[–] LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm not an expert, but looking at the research paper this is just blocking one one particular vitamin a receptor, so most functions of vitamin A would not be affected. Once concern is that this particular receptor (RAR-alpha) is partially responsible for neutrophil production, although they didn't notice any changes in animal tests, possibly because those receptors are tucked away inside your bone marrow. Still could be a concern with long term use though...

I suppose the longer term human studies will show if it decreases white blood cell count.

Yeah there are still several stages of clinical trials before this gets to market. Here's hoping though!

The question is what are the side effects

[–] SirQuack@feddit.nl 2 points 1 year ago

They should really be weighed against the current side effects associated with the hormonal pill.

Off the top of my head (not a doctor!), these include: depression, nausea, headaches and a myriad of others.

Soon to be banned because bIrTh CoNTroL bAD

This would also fall under gender affirming care but since it would be for men then maybe the fascists would be okay with it...

Birth control: US scientists develop world’s 1st male contraceptive pill

There's nothing world 1st about this.

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah I've heard about this a few times before already.

Vasalgel is a better, proven, effective, safe, and easily reversible option.

Why hasn’t it been approved yet?

[–] deegeese@sopuli.xyz 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Easier to get guys to take a pill than agree to a needle to the ballsack.

[–] zonnewin@feddit.nl 4 points 1 year ago

Even so, there is a lot of interest in vasalgel. That's not what's holding it up.

[–] massacre@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

... there it is

[–] LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

As a longtime donor of the project, last I checked there were still concerns about the reversability of the treatment

[–] daddakamabb@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago

Hormone-free? Fuck this shit. We have only one hormonal free birth control. But they get a pill?

[–] JakobFel@retrolemmy.com -4 points 1 year ago

Just about the LAST thing this world needs. Bad enough we have loads of spineless men already, and female birth control pills are ruining women as it is.
