S***, I've been meaning to learn Rust but didn't know where to start, thanks

Community rules (click to expand)
1. Follow the site-wide rules
- Instance-wide TOS: https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
- Lemmy code of conduct: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/code_of_conduct.html
2. Be civil
- Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
- Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
- Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
- Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
- Bigotry will not be tolerated.
3. Post Linux-related content
- Including Unix and BSD.
- Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of
sudo
in Windows. - No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
4. No recent reposts
- Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
5. π¬π§ Language/ΡΠ·ΡΠΊ/Sprache
- This is primarily an English-speaking community. π¬π§π¦πΊπΊπΈ
- Comments written in other languages are allowed.
- The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
- Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
6. (NEW!) Regarding public figures
We all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations. - Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
- We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
- Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed. Β
Please report posts and comments that break these rules!
Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.
Don't worry she knows she should teach you something bottom like .net
Sheβll make excuses for python inefficiencies. βBut it has so many libraries available!β
i feel attacked! i'm neither feline nor trans and still
Donβt worry.
No catgirlβs gonna get anywhere near the fetid odour of RMS.
Donβt ask me why I know it.
Newsflash: felines stink, the bigger they are the more they do. A big furry wouldnβt have a problem with body odor even in the scale of RMSβs.
Is this an April Fools joke?
It has to be. RMS browses the internet by e-mailing a remote machine that wget
s the page and e-mails it back to him, then views it in lynx
so that JavaScript doesn't run. There's absolutely no way in Hell he'd be on corporate social media.
(I'm not joking, by the way.)
Iβve seen a lot of FOSS purists before, but this guy has gotta be the Linux equivalent of one of those dudes who lives in the forest with a tin hat so the guberment canβt read his thoughts.
It's almost exactly like that only if the tin hat guy would turn out to be right every single goddamn time in hindsight. RMS is... a character at best, but he sure has some predictive powers.
He literally invented the concept of Free Software. So yeah, of course he's extreme about it!
The difference would be that RMS is extremely well-versed in computer technology. He understands the problems with non-free software.
Someone with his knowledge could choose to disregard those issues for convenience, but Stallman is willing to make great sacrifices.
Mastodon is corporate social media?
What makes you think the fake screenshot is Mastodon? I don't use it so I don't know about fonts and colors and margins matching up, but I'd at least expect there to be an instance name attached to the username.
Also, RMS is certainly not the kind of guy to use social media at all, libre and federated or not.
The page behind your link above actually solves the riddle in question:
I have a Mastodon account, @rms on mastodon.xyz, which mirrors the political notes of stallman.org. The person who set up the mirroring chose that site.
The profile picture and colour scheme fits. I'm guessing just the text is edited.
Welp, that's embarrassing for me. Good catch!
Everyone knows that transwomen prefer Rust due to its borrow checker which ensures memory safety without the overhead of garbage collection.
It's just basic biology, how do people not know this?
Trans men on the other hand prefer Haskell, top biology professors are dumbfounded!
I would have thought transmen would prefer Python.
!because of it's clearly phallic naming!<
Yes, and that's why the professors are scratching their heads.
What does it mean if one likes both?
Gender fluid
Oh, those biology professors and their pet slimes...
Not every trans woman tho
Look at those numbers to get your answer.
Yeah, but it's true. What if?
had me in the first half of the first half
Wut ? π€ Eli5 pls ?
Rust is a programming language
Hm OK. That I know..
The joke is that trans people in the tech community are typically developers+Linux users with a propensity to prefer Rust for a programming language.
A lot of people have been pushing for Rust to be incorporated into the Linux kernel more, rather than being mostly C.
It's a joke based on a stereotype.
Is that real rms post?
look at the interactions lol
No...
The joke is that trans people in the tech community are typically developers+Linux users with a propensity to prefer Rust for a programming language.
Wait how did that happen?
Transness and Software development are both correlated to neurodiversity. (I am a neurodivergent trans developer, ftr)
I haven't especially heard the Linux or Rust stereotype, but it's fair enough for a funny joke.
I haven't especially heard the Linux or Rust stereotype, but it's fair enough for a funny joke.
Stallman is one of the world's most prolific C developers, so that part of the joke may be just making fun of his (likely) reluctance to adopt Rust, which is often recommended to C programmers.
Oh I just meant with rust lol, but that does give me a little insight, thanks!
Alternative lifestyle people are visionaries
Personal pet theory that may also play into it: Trans people are also often in information security roles. Potentially, because when you have to hide your real identity, you start to get good at it.
And Rust also has various security benefits, especially when compared to C, but also when compared to garbage-collected languages (race conditions are largely prevented).
also because on the Internet you can just be the opposite gender and not have to correct everyone all the time, or just be anonymous and not have a gender
Also Stallman is against using Rust in the Kernel
Hurd?
Glad we ask his opinion first.
Does RMS even have any code in the Linux kernel?
Also: stallman is a character and has been associated with a ~~pedophelia/ebephilia yikes~~ semi reasonable Epstein takes and a lack of understanding that consenting sex with a minor causes harm.
