To be fair "2-3 deaths per yer in the US" is basically equivalent to zero. Thats basically noise in the data. If you look at the number of holes dug on beaches every year in the US, then "beach hole digging" will come out as one of the safest activities one can possible engage in.
He also compared it by saying "twice as deadly as sharks" which just further reinforces how little danger sharks pose to humans. Still an interesting video tho for sure.
I think you're making the mistake of sample size creep. Most people digging a hole in the sand don't get anywhere near deep enough to be life threatening. Only a tiny fraction ever get that deep, and that is the sample size you need to compare against deaths.
It would be like if we said that 2-3 people die jumping their bikes over a river, but that's just a tiny percentage of bike riders so it's perfectly safe.
There is a specifically dangerous set of circumstances and behaviors that lead to dramatically increased chances of death. That it is rare means that you're unlikely to stumble upon those conditions in your day to day life. If you are digging a deep hole at the beach, you are already part of the tiny fraction of people who are specifically at risk of death.
Only a tiny fraction ever get that deep, and that is the sample size you need to compare against deaths.
That is true, but the video is titled "Why Are Beach Holes So Deadly?" which to me seems like rather all including and vague framing.
Yes he clarifies which types of holes are dangerous at the end of the video, but i think that part (which is the safety critical one that could make this a good PSA vid) belongs at the start of the video.
I agree, the title is probably a bit hyperbolic, but the more honest "Why are Deadly Beach Holes So Deadly?" just seems like tautology.
Unfortunately clickbait and SEO Optimization is required to be successful on youtube these days. I dont really blame the creators for it.
