This seems like an overreaction, but I can understand how the Chinese would feel about this.
There's bad blood between China and Japan since forever. The atrocities the Japanese committed against the Chinese in the 1940s were just evil.
They still celebrate the worst offenders (amongst other dead) at Yasukuni shrine. It's something less than contrition.
Few countries have a clean humanitarian record so I'm not trying to vilify Japan.
However, this type of disrespect has a way of riling up even placid and accommodating citizens.
Obviously Japanese tourists can go to China but don't be disrespecting their national monuments.
