I don't believe there were any explanations made outside of the information we were given in the Enterprise episodes. We do know a fair bit about them from that though.
I believe it's probably entirely coincidental that they look a bit like the Changelings, it's just because of the smooth hairless look they were going for. Other than being defeated by the Federation in the future, they don't have a lot of similarities.
