Welcome to a Star Trek community where you’re free to chat and share your opinions about all things Trek!

I want to have a place where fans can come to praise, discuss, and even criticise things in the Star Trek franchise. No show or movie is perfect, and I don't believe people should be silenced for having a dissenting opinion. That being said, there are still a few rules.

Be Nice - No personal attacks. You can disagree with someone's opinion, but it needs to stop there.

No Slurs - This is applicable to ethnicity, religion, gender, or anything else.

No Adult Content - Keep it family friendly.

No Spamming or Trolling - Consistently spamming comments or trolling is just not needed.

Please keep topics Trek related or Trek adjacent for the most part, and have fun!

Happy First Contact Day!

In celebration of my favorite Star Trek holiday I decided to share my first contact with the franchise. I don't remember exactly how old I was, but I was pretty young when I saw a clip of TOS somewhere. Nobody in my family or friends watched or read any kind of science fiction, so it really stood out since it was quite a bit different than what I was accustomed to! I discovered what it was and began to learn a bit more about it.

Unfortunately my parents were never well off financially, so buying copies of a new show was off the table as was earning enough money to buy it myself! So I managed to "acquire" 10 or so episodes of the second season, which got me completely hooked on the show. After a year or so I was able to start earning some money and ended up buying the complete series.

Fast forward to today and I have everything up to 2016 and some of the shows after that too. I also introduced my siblings to it, and some of them have become fans as well! It's been a fun trip.

Do you remember your first introduction to Star Trek? It would be fun to hear other people's stories of how they got started, or just good memories involving it.

No official release date still, but it does say summer!

Apparently the date was leaked via a comment by SkyShowtime. There isn't an official release date for Paramount+, but if they do it like they have before, the US release date should be July 31st. That date also matches up with the Thursday release they've used for other shows as well.

Good news if true! August 2023 was a while ago.

I just moved to a new place not too long ago and I finally have enough room to set up a Star Trek corner! What is everyone decorating with? I ignored collectibles for years because I didn't want the temptation to clutter things up but now I have the room. When I look around at what's available it seems everyone makes things and it's scattered in all different little shops. Which makes it hard to get a good idea of what is out there!

I'm working on making up a little archive of informational videos about the props and production workflow of the Star Trek shows and movies, and I'm curious if anyone has any they particularly like.

To give you a better idea of what I'm thinking of, things like the recent Adam Savage video on the Voyager prototype and the bluescreen footage of the Enterprise model used for the flyby shots are what I'm going for. I'm not looking for the "DRAMA on the Star Trek Set!" and "Things You Never Noticed About TNG!!" clickbait that clutters YouTube or even the official BTS clips that Paramount puts out, just interesting videos made by fans and historians that provide information that we normally wouldn't see.

Websites with pictures and other information are very interesting as well!

As I make progress I'm planning to post the list here for everyone to access if interested. Also, if anyone else has already done something like this, I would be happy to know about it! I did a bit of poking around and didn't find much, but I don't want to double up on something somebody else has already done. I appreciate any information!

We've had quite a lot of Star Trek produced over the years! The last I had seen we're well over 900 episodes and counting. There have definitely been a lot of episodes that weren't that good, but we've also had quite a few episodes that are pretty great! What are your favorites?

I always have issues with narrowing things down, but these are the episodes that immediately spring to mind:

  • DS9 1x19 Duet
  • DS9 2x22 The Wire
  • DS9 7x10 It's Only a Paper Moon
  • TOS 2x06 The Doomsday Machine
  • TNG 3x03 The Survivors

After writing down those episodes and thinking about it a bit more, I also thought of these as well:

  • DS9 4x19 Hard Time
  • TNG 3x23 Sarek
  • DS9 6x19 In the Pale Moonlight
  • TOS 1x14 Balance of Terror
  • TNG 2x09 The Measure of a Man
  • DS9 4x02 The Visitor
  • TNG 4x02 Family

There are certainly more I haven't thought of so the list changes sometimes, but it's at least the list of the episodes that I remember most!

(Spoilers) What is up with the captain blaming Tripp for someone’s suicide? He made someone happy, then they went back to their shitty life and killed themselves — and that’s Tripo’s fault? Maybe the captain should have given the character asylum and then they wouldn’t have committed suicide, but instead he throws a hissy fit and blames Tripp. What a bizarre coda to an otherwise interesting episode.

What immediately bugs you when watching an episode? Mine is when they transport someone sitting down and they reintegrate in a standing position (or vice versa). Sure, the tech is near magical but my suspension of disbelief pretty much snaps when they do this.

And why do they look suspiciously like the shapeshifters from DS9?

Are they ever revisited/explained?

Recently watched a YouTube video where they mentioned the grub-eating Starfleet creeps with the exploding heads were supposed to be the precursor to the Borg invasion. But then the producers changed it up and decided the Borg would be the cube-riding mechanoids we’ve all come to know and love, instead of worm people.

I’m wondering if Trek ever fleshed out the conspiracy storyline on another show? Seems like a lot of potential wasted.

I was watching TNG 4x21 - The Drumhead last night, and after hearing Picard's speech I was reminded of just how many interesting monologues we've gotten over the years.

Sisko's saint in paradise speech from The Maquis Part 2, his speech to the Changelings in The Emissary Part 2, Garak's stories in The Wire, Marritza's speech in Duet, (can you tell I like DS9?) Spock's words to Ston in Amok Time, Kirk's risk is our business speech in Return to Tomorrow, Picard's speech in The Measure of a Man, and many others have stuck with me over the years.

However, my favorite is from the end of the TOS episode A Taste of Armageddon.

All right. It's instinctive. But the instinct can be fought. We're human beings with the blood of a million savage years on our hands, but we can stop it. We can admit that we're killers, but we're not going to kill today. That's all it takes. Knowing that we won't kill today. - James T. Kirk

The quote works very well in the context of the episode, but I think it has many applications in life as well.

What are your favorite monologues in Star Trek?

First like 5 episodes they already have sexism, and ableism, as well as referencing Elon musk as well as capturing a creature and using it for there own agenda, like wtf is this? Does it ever become less shitty or should I just skip it?

As I'm sure many have seen, Master Replicas is going to be releasing a series of action figures similarly sized to the Playmates line from a while back.

While I know there are some people that have negative opinions on action figures and collecting in general, I'm looking forward to the chance to get a few! Out of the batch they've confirmed so far I would definitely like the Spock one, and maybe Boimler and Mariner depending on what else they decide to do in the future.
