Are admins seeing an increase in applications? This seems fairly big!

It looks there’s a recent surge for Lemmy.ca 👀

Dbzer0 admin here. I've definitely noticed an increase in "spam" applications. Mostly stuff with applications that are blatantly wrong. Like just saying "yes" (multiple applications just had this???), "GOOGLE", an ad (to us) and one time, somebody literally just copy and pasted our own text to us (image below)

Though i've noticed a lot of good users applying too, coming from reddit. I think dealing with spam is fine if it means we get a lot of new users, and a fresh perspective to lemmy.

Btw congrats on getting picked for admin!

Thank you 😊

StarTrek.website typically sees 1-2 (approved) registrations per day. We have 12 approved in the past 48 hours.

And as usual, the top comment related to Lemmy is people complaining about bad UX

Let's keep guiding them to better UX

I've been trying the Photon/Voyager approach, the issue is that some people despise Photon and modernist interfaces with a passion, there's a comment on that thread I had to link to old.lemmy.zip

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't get why someone would hate Photon. It's a great interface, beautifully constructed and organized. Overall, great to use.

Wait, are you the real Blaze?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Interface are always a very debatable topic.

Well, yes, I mean I'm the one people usually see around here, not sure if that's what you mean by "the one"

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nevermind. I was using a different app so I didn't recognised you.

You watch Jehtt too? Amazing guy! I used to help with captions to his channel. Too bad the Discord server for that died…

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Heck yeah his videos always had me laughing on the floor I loved the one where knuckles brought in a knock off sonic and Silver yelled at him 🤣

Aw dang that’s too bad about the discord server.

"Can I be real with you?" "Sure." "Thanks." - 🦔

I've been focused lately on changing some UI aspects of Photon to please both sides, compact mode is now comparable to old reddit (while looking good) and it's the default. People who like them can switch to the cozy interface on their own.

I don't disagree at all, but I also think it's important to keep the conversation focused on the benefits. eg: "I'm happy to trade Reddit's UI for a platform that doesn't encourage toxic behavior" (and so on).

EDIT: The threadiverse will not ever be Reddit and we won't be able to please everyone, I think it's important to portray confidence in the platform and not get bogged down defending the (less important) flaws.

Like PieFed's:-)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

What mobile app works nicely with it?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't think PieFed has mobile apps yet, but I believe they're planning on forking Thunder for Lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yea, that's a problem, I feel without a decent mobile app it would be a worse UX for many users. Until they have mobile app options I'll keep directing users to something like Voyager for mobile or phtn.app for desktop

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

For recommendations to people on Reddit, PieFed's app support is "coming soon", but if you want more details personally, they are here.

Edit: Also, PieFed has a number of features that make it work more like the Voyager app than the Lemmy web UI, e.g. the Tile view. I also like how PieFed makes the community side-bar text so readily visible, placing it below every single post (like if you were going to reply you'd be on that page), in contrast to Voyager or Lemmy web UI where you first have to navigate to the community page and then ask for the side-bar to be displayed. Nothing is perfect ofc, but there are a number of ways that using PieFed in a browser is very much like or even better than (some? I have only tried Voyager iirc) Lemmy apps.

Some users want apps, and it's a strict requirement. I don't get it, but they are quite vocal about it

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Hey, Firefox (& even Chrome) is an app!:-P

Do you have any sense as to how true that holds for the actual content creators? I suppose at some point it may not matter, if e.g. they go where the users are.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

None, that's the main issue. They are working on a Thunder fork
