My cats have gotten better at not doing it on the bed. They just wait until I'm sleeping and do it somewhere along the path I use when I wake up.

A small portable steam cleaner will handle puke stains pretty well. Good tool to have if you've got pets, i borrow one from family if i need one (no pets of my own)
Carpet is disgusting anyways. Might as well replace it.
Carpet that people don't clean properly is disgusting. But it's not inherently disgusting. It's comfortable.
There's no cleaning the padding properly. Any installed carpet is going to be disgusting in a year or two.
If you want carpet, put down a rug.

My dog will dodge the towel I shove under his face as he pukes. Like, thanks, dude. (Luckily, I can just pick him up and aim him--there are benefits to having a 4.5kg dog.)
