What is Cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a science-fiction sub-genre dealing with the integration of society and technology in dystopian settings. Often referred to as “low-life and high tech,” Cyberpunk stories deal with outsiders (punks) who fight against the oppressors in society (usually mega corporations that control everything) via technological means (cyber). Burn Cycle (stylized as Burn:Cycle) is a 1994 point-and-click adventure video game for the CD-i that incorporates full motion video and is set in a surrealist cyberpunk world. The game follows Sol Cutter, a computer hacker and data thief, whose latest theft causes a virus named Burn Cycle to be implanted in his head. The game features a two-hour countdown timer to defuse the virus, with the player jumping back and forth between a fictional ingame virtual reality world known as the Televerse in order to destroy the Burn Cycle virus and solve the mystery of its creation.

Someone mentioned this game elsewhere on the fediverse recently... they said it's a forerunner of the Cyberpunk 2077 game... Well, keep in mind that Burn:Cycle was made 30 years ago so don't expect too much graphics-wise... Still it's an interesting mix of video cutscenes, 3D graphics, and point-and-click, especially for the time...

Wow, the story sounds incredibly cyberpunk, the visuals look incredibly cyberpunk... and the gameplay looks incredibly irritating. I'm glad we live in an age of longplays where I can watch the entire game without having to actually play it. Thanks for sharing!
