Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Summary

CBS plans to demand Donald Trump’s personal financial records if his $20 billion lawsuit against the network proceeds to discovery.

Trump sued CBS over an allegedly doctored 2024 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris, claiming election interference and unfair competition.

CBS argues the lawsuit is politically motivated “judge shopping” and lacks legal merit under Texas law. The network also contends Trump’s claims involve editorial, not commercial, speech.

The case is before Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, and legal proceedings could force Trump to disclose financial ties to his media and campaign operations.

Wow, so we get to see how corrupt the corrupt dictator is. And this will stop his tyranny how?

[–] bravesilvernest@lemmy.ml 43 points 1 year ago

The "nice" thing here is that it would actually put in the record how corrupt he is. Not that that would do much other than nock another arrow for later suits.

I've said it before, why would he would have to? Having to do something is usually due to the fact that not doing it is illegal. Trump doesn't care about the law. He would just say "no" and then nothing happens like usual.

I’m guessing it’s needed to show damages.

[–] Mog_fanatic@lemmy.world 24 points 1 year ago (2 children)

At this point I legitimately wouldn't be surprised if he just said no, fired the judge, appointed his own, and then got whatever the hell verdict he wanted and absolutely no one would say anything other than what a "massive win" he got in the courts

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Absolutely NO way he'll fire Kacsmaryk. They specifically filed the suit in his district because he's the only judge in that district, so they knew he would be hearing the case, and he has often ruled in favor of Trump's absurd machinations.

Hey, plenty of people would "slam" him in news articles, the wheels of justice still turn! ^please ^don't ^riot ^its ^scary /s

Having done zero math to reach this figure, it’s known to still be optimistic.

The kicker is, he needs to win the lawsuit to become a billionaire before he shows his financials, to avoid his sycophants discovering he has never been a billionaire.

Although what would they care. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[–] frezik@midwest.social 9 points 1 year ago

With the sale of his Trump meme coin, he probably is a billionaire now. Yes, it tanked, but he doesn't care. He already has their money.

I don't think any major purchasers care, either, since it was probably a money laundering front in the first place.

[–] root_beer@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago

He cares. It’s all [self-]image. He doesn’t care whether they care or not, it’s a blow to his ego. It’s the Hindenburg.

[–] solarvector@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago

He would be a billionaire if he didn't give so much away.

Twice i remember his tax returns being leaked and it accomplished nothing.

[–] Bahnd@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

But this isnt just IRS records, or stuff the government already has. Its legal discovery, your required to provide much more than just the stuff wealthy people are already good at hiding from the feds.

[–] Old_Jimmy_Twodicks@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Judge Kacsmaryk's lips are surgically attached to Trump's ass cheek, so CBS will be ice skating uphill in this one. They may as well take every swing they can.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 year ago

People like him who have facilitated Trump's fascist takeover need to be held accountable
