It's only an alternative if you can read said e-book on an actual e-reader with e-ink. A smartphone is not an e-reader.

I am currently awaiting the arrival of my BOOX Note, which is a kind of Kindle alternative.

Damn is that expensive though. But I think Amazon sells at a discount to make money on the bookstore.

Kobo is also a kindle alternative, and syncs books from your local library!

I have mix feelings about this, as while there are some DRM-free books, most are locked to the application.

Meaning: you can't give your book to someone after you're done and if the app stops working in the future, your book won't be available.

I'll rather have them call it renting than buying.

I'm not dissing it, I'll rather do this than using Amazon.

There are alternatives without DRM or at least with DRM that's easy to strip.

Basically anything that sells ePub, so Kobo.com, ebooks.com (this one has a drm free category), etc. DRM is decided by the publisher not the store so not everything will be available without protection.

If the book you want has DRM there's a Calibre plugin that is usually able to remove it.
