And when people just walk in and use it anyway? No server is going to care

Dunno about Starbucks specifically; but many fastfood places near me keep the bathroom doors locked.

You've gotta ask for the key which usually comes on a big ass stick/keyring/keyfob thing to make it really hard to forget or walk out of the store with it.

Some even have electronic locks with a button behind the counter. They 'buzz' you into the bathroom like a damn security checkpoint.

They certainly aren't paid to care

Nope they sure won't. Even if you have to ask for a coffee they'll just tell it to you so they can move on with their day

I’ve seen places where you are given a QR code in your receipt to open the toilets

This writer sucks. He suggests that part of starbucks' problems are that it's baristas are unionizing. Gtfoh and eat my entire asshole, what a douche.

If Starbucks paying employees a living wage puts them in trouble then they do not deserve to exist and good fucking riddance.

"Never should have been" out of Streets Blog? When did they hire Uncle Asshole to write for them?

I thought that too after only having seen the title. However, reading the article they make a good point that there should be public toilets that aren't run by corporations, that the government, state etc should provide them.

I think this is a good point.

Paid restrooms like in parts of Europe?

Americans can handle the cart quarter at Aldi, even 2 quarters would still be less that using a shitter in the middle of Rotterdam.
