Turns out you can only use it once a month on the app anyways. It’s not what you think normally it’s a paid subscription service but they added it to the basics app for “free”. But I agree they should choose those words more carefully.
Yeah, they should choose words that are not intentionally misleading or outright false.
The actual software to scan your phone has been around for a while, you can use it entirely for free and as often as you want: mvt.
I'm guessing whatever this ziffdavis trash is, its probably using the same thing just with a nice coat of paint and and interface that the sort of mouth breather who'd pay for security theater apps can use.
I may be asking stupid question but how do you install from this link?

There's a section near the bottom about how to install and you'll also want to read through the documentation on how to use it.
What's not in the instructions: First, you'll need to have Python installed, then you'll be able to execute that command to download/install the module.
At a quick glance, this is some software that you install on a computer, then you connect your phone to it and execute the command to perform a scan.
You'll want to get comfortable with using a terminal window or PowerShell/CMD prompt, etc.
You may need to look up some commands on how to change your directory to the root directory of the phone before executing any scans.
ok, interesting. went ahead for giggles did a search for the app, the android search page shows 2.4 stars out of 5, which is not what you want to see in security apps, but the ratings and any reviews are mysteriously absent from it's google play store entry. im gonna pass.
Wouldn't Android's sandboxing prevent this from even doing what it claims to do?
I also can make an app that says it detects bad things and offers to clean it for a dollar
