(The)m (a)r(e) snakes!
(The)m (a)r(e) not!
O(h), (ye)s (Th)a[sic](y) (a)r(e)
(See)(The)m (itty)b(itty)(eye)s
(Wel)l, I b(e)
(The)m (a)r(e) snakes!

EDIT: What's hilarious is that in my neck of the woods I learned this as "ducks" instead of "snakes" almost almost 40 years ago at this point.

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

I also learned a version that was "LMNO Snakes" (Hell, 'em ain' no snakes)

Em ar not!

Oh es ay ar.
See em eedy beedy eyes?

EL, I be...
Em ar snakes.

Feels like it would've been easier to guess if it'd been clear that it was a conversation. No one expects a sign to be talking to itself.

Yeah, exactly. I also don't know how common it is in other languages for slang/shorthand to match letter/word sounds. This is probably in the same bucket as languages having different animal sounds.

I love how your comment has more likes than the post does. XD I grew up in farmland Utah, I speak redneck, and you did a darn good job. 😁

It's a haiku relating to the famous court case between Mr S Nakes and Mr N Ot, as represented by his lawyer Oscar Zamebdis (common misspelling) who liberated Mr Nakes from participating in a reading test due to his sunburn.

The watermark of circles in the background reference how much he won in the settlement

Would have been better if the letters were properly spaced
