THE POLICE PROBLEM

5370 readers
1 users here now

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

Found an article from the Salt Lake Tribune.

Azalea was booked into the Utah County Jail, the statement said, charged with disrupting a meeting, a class A misdemeanor, and interference with a police officer and assault on a police officer, both class B misdemeanors. The two people who left the meeting with her were given citations, the statement said.

...

After she was released, Azalea told The Tribune she got a CT scan because of “intense jaw pain.” While her jaw was not broken, she said she has a concussion and bruises on her jaw, shoulder and knee.

So they fucked her up and then charged her with assault.

Just a quick poll, has anyone ever had an interaction with a police officer where you're grateful they exist?

Like has a cop ever done anything that's actually helped you(not including 'going easy' on you, or letting something side)?

I've had one good interaction with a police officer who put his lights on and parked behind me while I had to change a flat tire on the interstate in a section with no real shoulder.

Other than that I've been harassed several times by cops, pulled over for BS reasons as an excuse for them to search my car for weed, which they did so illegally, and the charges were later dropped. I've also had a cop pull a gun on me when I was like 16 because my friends and I were play fencing with sticks in a parking lot.

But seriously, they have huge budgets, all sorts of Kit, and walk around in body armor trying to display an intimidating presence, but what do they actually do? They have military weaponry and yet can't be bothered to stop school shootings, or hold rich pedophiles and literal traitors accountable, and they'll assault you for trying to use rights that you're guaranteed to have per the constitution.

They're basically society's equivalent of Walmart greeters. They stand around hoping their presence will deter people from committing crimes, but really they just exist to keep property safe.

My son was choking to death and a police officer saved his life.

My brother died in a car accident and they caught the guy who did it.

There are many decent police officers and they serve a real function in society.

THIS DOES NOT EXCUSE THE ACTIONS OF THOSE WHO DO WRONG.

THIS DOES NOT EXCUSE THE - INACTION - OF THOSE WHO ARE TURNING A BLIND EYE TO BEHAVIOR LIKE THIS

Also, another side note. The police helped me convince my local parks and rec board to get signage for no fishing on a bike trail that was around a blind corner where people would crash their bikes all the time due to bags, coolers, poles, etc.. they advocated for this with me which I found commendable.

I try to keep an open mind while also admonishing what I see is bad. I'm hoping that someday somehow they'll remove the stigma of reporting bad apples from police departments and prioritize real oversight

The police are the wealthy’s publicly funded security.

[–] Kage520@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

Yes.

My little brother (17 years old) was in some danger from my mother who had kicked in his door because she was mad and is known to throw things in her anger. Fearing he would be injured from whatever caused this, I drove over and picked him up (with her blessing... She screeched he was never welcome to return). The next morning I went to the police to report the incident, and get advice on what to do next. I knew she would change her mind the next day and I wanted to be prepared.

The police officer took the time to talk to me about the relevant laws and what to do should she try to retaliate. That night she called the police on me and that officer was AWFUL. He did everything he could to escalate the situation, threatening to charge me with "a crime", yelling at me, etc. I told him his colleague had informed me of the relevant laws, and unless a judge intervened, we were allowed to wait for CPS to weigh in on the matter. He persisted with his threatening, so I asked who his Sargent was, and asked to speak with them. He said he would have him call me. Not liking his tone, I called the headquarters myself and reported the situation, and where we were with a different Sargent. His called later, but when he found out she was involved, quickly disengaged himself from everything.

She was also quite nice, and let us know the best way to safely handle the situation. Thanks to her and the first police officer, we were eventually able to make amends with everything and no future incidents occurred. My little brother was returned to my mother's care, and she never repeated the behavior. In the end, it's a good story of how it SHOULD work.

But imagine if I had never called. If I continued to feel like the aggressive cop was going to be putting my little brother into an unsafe environment, and I felt like I had to protect him. THAT cop would have loved to use force, and what would our family be like today?

I guess the moral of the story is, if you suspect an issue will arise, be proactive in finding the best solution. If you wait, there are a lot of bad solutions with the cops that will probably happen.

i grew up in the hood, cops were always late and often made the situation worse

[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 week ago

My ex was being assaulted coming out of her car to walk inside. 5 cop cars were there in less than 60 seconds, suspect fled and they chased him down. Brought every charge against him they could find. We did NOT live in a great area.

That would be the only time.

He could have killed her or hurt her much worse with this. That was a lot of force and a direct face slam.

They are not playing fair. It is time to damage data centers.

[–] fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 20 points 1 week ago (2 children)

They need water, electricity, and data coming in. All can be damaged outside of the facility.

Data centers didn't violently assault this victim. Conservatives with guns did. They need to be dealt with.

The government wants you to support datacenters. By force if necessary. The owners of the datacenters running AI on them are hemorrhaging money. The wealthy don't stand to make very much on them at all.

Think about that.

[–] OrteilGenou@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

One day this cop will be dropped as part of mass layoffs, and will rage-protest until his Boston Dynamics replacement face-slams him into the floor.

That's not a good thing.

[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

This is a bit of a hot take, but I think security services are going to be the absolute last thing that will be replaced.

Looking how much money was dumped into ICE and attempts at federalizing local PDs, I think they need the human element of brutality.

Conservatives are inherently violent and are biologically unable to experience empathy. This is why they support and celebrate this kind of violence on their victims.

Conservatives do not see normal people as humans. They never will.

He needs to be tried and hanged. He premeditated that. He took her to open space and away from witnesses to do that. Tried, convicted, hanged.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think ICE, as a class, should be trialed and hung. Nuremberg only killed about 210 Nazis. We shouldn't make the mistake of being restrained against such monsters.

For all the mass shooters the states have, can just one of them shoot up a police station? Please? Why do you dumb fuck yanks always choose schools, as a people you literally would rather kill kids than Nazis.

[–] Narauko@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Everyone knows they only hit soft targets like gun free zones. The only person more cowardly in Uvalde than the cops was the shooter.

Utah is without a doubt one of the worst states in the US. It is absolutely rife with corruption and abuse, massively enabled by the Mormon cult

[–] godsammitdam@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 week ago

This reminds me that I need to work out.

A fascist worked out today, have you?

I think that cop who can't walk is more deserving of a body slam than that woman actively fighting for human rights over capital interests

Even if she was breaking some sort of law, I doubt the consequences was being slammed head first on tile.

Everything coming from a cop is basically their own personal punishment toward the person they don't like for exercising their rights.
