I think one of the biggest issues is that nothing is real anymore. 90% of what 90% of us do is utterly meaningless. For the average person, life is entirely solved. Our problems are mostly by choice, be it ours or someone else's. The only real things in our lives are tragedies that we'd never have been able to prevent or resolve anyway.

An apocalypse is enticing because then our actions would have direct consequences. Right now, the consequences of our actions are filtered and diffused through a trillion layers of bullshit where the positive and negative effects are basically invisible unless you make a ridiculous amount of money very quickly, or like, kill someone with your car.

Watch for when Zombie/apocalypse movies start getting popular again.

It's absolutely a sign of mass despair at "the system".

Zombies make everyone equal again. The executive actually becomes dead weight compared to folks who have spent their lives doing physical or practical labour.

I honestly loved covid. Am I crazy? I got to stay in with my girl, be comfy, work from home, then watch movies and play video games, all with zero fomo.

[–] IamMoonPie@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

I lost my grandma during covid and I’d still rather go back to that then this hell scape. At least with Covid I didn’t have to schedule my breakdowns.

[–] BreakingBigfoot@lemmus.org 2 points 1 day ago

Great for me; I'm "neurodivergent" anyway. Perish the thought of being forced to deal with sociopaths and other stressed-out employees I'd need to work with all day, every day until you die? Now that's my idea of going crazy!...

[–] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My therapist told me that, in fact, it's not normal to wish to be hit by a bus on the way to work every morning just so you could escape from going to work.

[–] Blah463@thelemmy.club 4 points 1 day ago

I am bad about not looking when I cross at crosswalks. Someone asked me about it once, "If they hit me hard enough it won't be my problem anymore."

“We’ve reached a point where Americans would rather the world fall apart than get off their cowardly asses and do something.”

It's always the same

The fact that plenty of them, most famously that poster-boy for 'Murican shit Henry Ford was a huge fan of Hitler and his bullshit gets glossed over

They sat out the war until they were pushed

And it will happen again and again, even when the problem is in their own house

Being hit by a motor vehicle of some sort owned by a large company with deep pockets and suffering a horrific but ultimately temporary injury with absolutely no longer-term health effects that nonetheless results in a seven figure injury settlement

I hate to admit it but I’d love to go back to Covid times where I was forced to stay in my house and never leave. I don’t want people dying but I’m so fucking tired.

[–] daggermoon@piefed.world 4 points 1 day ago

It wasn't any different for me. I was one of those so-called "essential workers". I still had to go to work. When I wasn't at work, I stayed home and layed in bed and played games. People talked about isolation and loneliness and I was just thinking " First time, is it?".

Many, many people, including myself, embraced the shit out of COVID.

That was a pretty clear sign that our society and way of life sucks.

[–] AmyAye@nord.pub 6 points 2 days ago

I was almost not at all affected day to day by COVID, I just went to work still because it's isolated, no mask etc even needed.

But it was soooo much better with less traffic and less people at the stores. Even just, the "one way Aisles" at the stores were so much better. You go in, everything flows so much smoother.

No joke this is me. I had a major surgical procedure a decade ago. It was a 3 day hospital stay to recover. It's one of the most relaxing, peaceful times of my life, even with all the pain and nurses checking on me. I remember it very fondly.

[–] lonefighter@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

I had major surgery last year. I was out of work for 2 months. It was the greatest decompression break from work ever, except I went back a week early and before I was really physically ready because I was only getting about 1/4 of my normal paycheck from disability and I was super broke (luckily I had managed to save up enough to pay my rent in advance). I read lots of books and stayed up all night playing video games and looking outside at the night sky.

It really sucked in other ways. I had 2 entire months where I only spoke to another human maybe 5-6 times and most of those were a coworker who knew I was lonely and would call me during downtime on their shift to check in and see how my recovery was going. It really highlighted how alone and invisible I am in this world and there's nothing quite so sad as being like well my surgeon says I can't lift any weight but I have to get groceries into my apartment somehow and take my trash across the complex to the cans and I have literally no one to ask to do that so I guess I'll just pray I don't rip open all my incisions and eviscerate myself.

[–] the_artic_one@piefed.social 26 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is the premise of Zom100: Bucket list of the Dead, the main character's job is so shitty, he considers the zombie apocalypse to be a massive improvement over having to go to work and just starts living his best life and doing all the things he never had time for.

It's very relatable.

Covid time was personally great for me. Vietnam locked things down. We had food delivered. We didn't get sick. At home with the wife and kid. Watching movies and tv. Playing games. Making the second kid. I worked from home for something like 6 to 9 months because my office is in a neighboring province and VN didn't allow travel between provinces until a later relaxing of restrictions after vaccines became available.

Can confirm. This is me. Especially after the last two years. Everything just feels so hopeless, and I'm expected to spend most of my waking hours feeding a system that gleefully kicks us in the teeth every single day.

[–] Daft_ish@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago

I just started letting it all out. Its the same as societal collapse but happening in real time.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago

people use alcohol to escape from certain things. i know people who did the reverse with work, they use work to escape from dealing problems at home.

"it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism"

[–] BreakingBigfoot@lemmus.org 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That's why I never really fell into religion. Like 10 times in recent history, the apocalypse or rapture was supposed to happen; people were clapping their hands for Jesus' return, thinking they'd be chosen to ascend or go wherever. For how long exactly? Have they always been like this? I can't help but stand there wondering if those people aren't wrapped too tight and loose with reality; they kind of worry me. It's like they actually want the world to end every waking day, and they believe it.

[–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Just getting silly here, but what if the people who are harmed by the system come together and abolish the system, because they are the majority?

[–] Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 days ago

There's a word for that, but whenever I start typing it into my phone a bunch of police drones start to buzz my building.

I like to refer to this state as "Existential Apathy".

At some point, you just stop giving a shit and want to stop having to pretend to give a shit more than anything else.

[–] Polisheocket@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago

I actually have money and a stable job and even I want a change, I’m tired

[–] adhdsergio@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Yes but somehow I would guess people in war zones, say for example in Ukraine, somehow wish for this boring normality we seem to be tired of. I try to think of that every time i seem too tired of the grind. Though in some way, I think everybody matters more in a war than in a peaceful economy

[–] tooclose104@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago

The ol' grass is greener on the other side paradox. I get it though, I sometimes catch myself thinking it. I don't even hate my job, it's just exhausting for reasons I'm working to resolve.

[–] moakley@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Is that not a normal feeling? Because I felt that way long before things got this bad.

Thats one of the worst things about being a parent to a small child. I used to get excited about getting the flu. Week in bed just gormed out watching crap on TV.

"You're relieved you don't have to go to work 'cause you thought you were gonna get eaten? What the fuck is this world?"

[–] darthsundhaft@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

At least that kind of fantasy is a real outcome rather than the delusional cope mechanism that has everyone believing this kind of reality should continue. The one where nothing significantly changes and we keep going one step forward, 2 steps back. All while people die, the inequality continues, etc.

I don't like being false about where we are and where we should be. This is not right.

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Also because people come together during major crises.

And unfortunately, it does not look like we'll be able to get rid of capitalism (and more importantly capitalists) without either a mass uprising or a devastating catastrophe (like total ecological collapse).

Currently we're about to reach the latter, which I don't think is preferable, but perhaps it'll turn out well in the end. I sure hope so.

It's easier to imagine a convenient bad thing happening than a good thing happening, I guess?
