So former smokers who are now vapers (where 'now' is 2018) develop lung cancer 56% more often than former smokers who are now non smokers.

Former regular smokers who do have a family history of lung cancer, who formerly smoked half a pack a day for 5 years, who have not smoked in 5 years, are white, who have a BMI of 25-30... have a statstically indistinguishable from 0% risk of developing lung cancer.

So... 56% more than 0% is 0%.

Yeah there's gonna need to be more and better studies on this. There are tons of important factors and differences this study doesn't seem to control for.

The study itself stresses that it is an early study and insufficient to establish causality, it is a broad, top down epidemiological observational study, and is unfortunately not publically available (beyond a portion of the abstract) without a subscription.

If it's the same study s few weeks ago, then no, or rather, the study isn't about that - it's comparing ex-smokers who quit cigarretes for good vs ex-smokers who switched to vapes.

There, vapes have higher lung cancer risk than not smoking at all, according to the study. Which isn't really surprising.

I actually had to switch back to smoking cigarettes to quit vaping, then used Wellbutrin to quit smoking cigarettes.

It’s been close to 5 years now.

In all, scientists found that those who had turned to vaping after quitting traditional cigarettes developed lung cancer at a rate about 56 percent higher than those who quit entirely. Alarmingly, incidents of lung cancer death among vape users nearly doubled, with a lung cancer-specific death rate 91 percent higher than non-vape users.

Of course, there’s an important group that falls outside the bounds of the study: anyone who got hooked on vaping without trying cigarettes first. It’d be fascinating to learn more about their fates, but the implication of the study — that vaping is turbocharging the chances of cancer among former smokers — is almost certainly cause for alarm.

vaping WHAT tho? nicotine? cannabis?

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

the use of non-tobacco devices like vapes and e-cigarettes to help quit smoking carries a strong link with the development of lung cancer.

[–] noxypaws@pawb.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

doesn't answer my question in the slightest

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Appears to be vaping in general. Non nicotine, nicotine, cannabis, all of it

You got the full paper?

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Makes sense. Nicotine is still a bad chemical that does bad things and I'm sure regularly inhaling hot, thick vapors does its own damage. Better than smoking tobacco, still a half measure to just quitting.

[–] gothmog@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago

It's not the nicotine.

Finally scientific proof to what everyone with a brain already figured out.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

For the people who need this proof, this won't change their mind. It's going to take getting lung cancer for even half of them believe vaping isn't harmless. Not long ago some idiot was telling me adamantly that nicotine, a known carcinogen, is harmless.

I wonder if it's because of all the very tiny particles in it. But don't worry! I just discovered Radon! Radon is simple. Wear it every day, smell it, lick it, make it yours. You're in control of your cancer. And it's free in basements!
