GTA 6 will launch on PC just a few months after consoles, according to a new report.

Fuck GTA6 and it's publisher/developer. They treat their employees like absolute shit.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

I'm so glad to see this comment. I have been worried that everyone would be all in on this. I am relieved to see that people can see the company for what it is.

I can't wait to not buy it.

This is a very quick turnaround for modern Rockstar games, but it's also a reflection of how things have changed. PC is a bigger percentage of the market than it ever has been before, PlayStation + Xbox combined is smaller than it was for the previous two generations, and even if Rockstar previously expected GTA6 to be responsible for tens of millions of consoles sold, shortages in the wake of the AI bubble now make that somewhere between improbable and impossible.

I doubt that's why. People literally bought out PS5's after the gameplay reveal. I think the reason they are speeding things up is due to the fact that slop machines allowed massive progress in emulation, which more than likely is going to allow PC players to play GTA 6 without waiting for Rockstar and they hate that.

I don't think a development that happened in the last few weeks has sped up a massive ship like Rockstar. Console sales reports are on a lag, but August was a decade+ low point for hardware sales due to how expensive they are, so the addressable market is still looking likely to be far lower than what Rockstar's last two games had. Another good point that GamesBeat raised (solely conjecture, of course) is that the business of the online mode is different this time around. Roleplay servers are a big part of the appeal of GTAV, and on PC, that means people are enjoying that for free with no exposure to microtransactions on private servers. Rockstar hired those modders to roll that functionality into all versions of GTA6 Online this time around (this part isn't conjecture), and there are a lot of opportunities to pull in those PC customers from the jump. In other words, they probably care less about people double dipping when the box price of the game pales compared to GTA Online money.

I do find it really odds that they're not releasing GTA online 2 or whatever they end up calling it at the same time as the GTA 6 release.

[–] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

They didn't for GTA5 or RDR2 either. I suspect there are a lot of reasons for that; more time to test the server infrastructure, time for people to play through the campaign without rushing so that it gets its time in the spotlight, and time for people to acquire the game and form a critical mass of players online. All guesses, but that's what I've got.

Also PS5 emulation is advancing at an astonishing rate. That has to be making them a little concerned. Last night I watched someone play through the Demon Souls remake on PC. There were some audio issues and stuttering here and there but it was very playable.

Plus the massive budget means a longer payback period, best get started early. Although they do lose out on some of the "already bought it on PS5, buy again on PC" crowd if it's still "fresh" on console.

[–] ennof@feddit.org 24 points 4 days ago (1 children)

GTA 6 will hit PC approximately 2 days after console release because someone is going to decompile it with their agent and run it natively. Actually, a tool to run PS5 games natively on Linux and Windows already exists, though it likely won't work for GTA 6 (yet).

It'll have the latest and greatest DRM. Turn around time for those to be cracked is months to years.

Anyway everybody knows that the best version of GTA is the one they release on PC the console one isn't even going to run at 60 so it's basically unplayable even if it was interested.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

And yet I still don't care.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago

Believe it when I see it.

Then I'll proceed to wait and not pay full price. So I'll probably be waiting years to play it anyway.

I will still be knee deep in Fire Emblem, OoT Remake, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Castlevania Belmont’s Curse, Fable, and Persona 4.

There is just no time for GTA6.

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Oh man I wish I could afford them all lol

[–] mursejoy@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago

Ahh wait for sales everything but the Nintendo titles will get discounted im sure

[–] Flashstash98@piefed.zip 7 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Is this source reputable? I've seen a lot of articles about a Red Dead 2 remaster as well

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I can't see any point in a remake of red Dead 2 it's fine. You have to wait a while for a remake to be popular or there isn't gonna be enough visual difference.

[–] BreakerSwitch@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's IGN, the most major gaming publication, so I would consider it trustworthy

[–] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

IGN cited a GamesBeat article.

[–] Flashstash98@piefed.zip 4 points 4 days ago

Yeah that's what I meant. I had never heard of GamesBeat before, but after some research they seem to post quite reliable info

[–] chocrates@piefed.world 1 points 4 days ago

This hurts, I haven't gotten around to rdr2 yet, didn't it just come out?

[–] Katana314@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

I wonder if they were waiting until Maid Cafe Simulator came out on Steam, so they wouldn't be competing with that release window.

[–] warmaster@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

By the time it drops, we'll be playing vibe coded ports on a Commodore 64 powered by a lemon and a potato. They better hurry.

[–] AGD4@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

So much for Squadron 42 avoiding the buzz saw of GTA marketing.

GamesBeat's sources say Q1 2027, so before April.
