What politicians want us to believe:

Voting: changes the system

Doing politics: it's for professionals

How it really works:

Voting: the possibility to kick bad persons out

Doing politics: changes the system

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Only locally, at least here in the US.

Nationally you have no power politically unless you're a billionaire or available for purchase by a billionaire. Thankfully, at least locally, good things are still possible.

It's more like the first guy threatens to break your windows to make you drown even quicker, the second guy offers to slowly save you by 2060, you have to choose one, and if you don't choose, someone else will choose the "drown quick" guy for you

[–] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 25 points 1 week ago (5 children)

What is stopping you from both asking the one who is willing to help AND trying to find a second solution on your own?

You don't lose anything by voting.

[–] LocalAreaMan@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

You're really bad with metaphors. The second person is holding your head down.

How about I draw you a picture.

That's not the choice we have. There's the frustratingly slow option, and the "we're gonna piss in your mouth and poke you in the eye with needles" recuers.

Yeah, but it's election season the US, so OP is here to run interference and keep Republicans in office supporting Putin's meatpuppet.

You're missing their point though. People are dying. While things are slow people are dying. At a certain point that becomes a problem doesn't it? How long do you wait? How slow can we afford it to be?

It's just kind of absurd to ask people who are dying of lack of Health Care right this minute to be patient. To ask people that are living in crippling poverty to be patient. To ask women and children that are being raped with impunity to be patient. We're drowning here.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Nah man we can't do anything about any of that. If we didn't kill a few million Working Class People every year then one CEO might not get his golden parachute. So obviously we can never take actual steps to fix things.

[–] K1nsey6@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

To quote James Baldwin in 1982.

What is it you wanted me to reconcile myself to? I was born here, almost 60 years ago. I'm not going to live another 60 years. You always told me 'It takes time.' It's taken my father's time, my mother's time, my uncle's time, my brothers' and my sisters' time. How much time do you want for your progress?"

Isn't that exactly what OP said?

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The difference is between one group doing a bad job of rescuing, while the other is actively trying to make things worse.

What is the point of Lemmy if the comments are just gonna get removed bruh.

Useless thread

Echo chambers gotta echo.

[–] offspec@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (4 children)

OP is the mod removing comments calling them out for their terrible takes. VOTE.

[–] stinkytofuisgood@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I think lemmy.world is probably worth avoiding in general. Consolidated power in one instance is no better than Reddit.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

We have to use one of the big instances, in our system the small instances don't have a chance and if you don't use one of the two big ones you're basically throwing your comment away

What is the point of Lemmy if the comments are just gonna get removed bruh.

I mean, the sidebar is pretty clear on what this comm is for and what is going to get deleted. The mod isn't exactly subtle; libs just keep not getting it.

[–] monkeyslikebananas2@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Seriously, I’m blocking this community.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago (8 children)

I wish I could tag communities with Voyager. I'd use tags like "deletes a lot" and "women only" so I'll know to read only.

Nothing disgusts me more than billionare "philanthropists" who pledge to give away 70%-90% of their wealth to charities AFTER THEY DIE... While these MFs REFUSE TO EVEN PAY 5% TAX NOW and keep hiding their wealth and fucking kids offshores!

AND guess what charity they choose to donate it to after they fucking rot 6-ft underground? IT'S THEIR FAMILY-OWNED FOUNDATION CHARITY!

Every fucking billionare does this same trick to horde untaxed wealth for generation after the other. Or Elon who wants to go to Mars to "save humanity" , while doing jack shit to save humanity now and paying billions to support and keep Nazis in powers everywhere in the world.
So Fuck you Bill Gates, Fuck you Warren Buffon, Fuck you Zuck and Besos and every billionare philathropists who claim they will donate after they fucking die

[–] Balldowern@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (2 children)

OMG the main comments are disappearing. Can't understand what people are arguing anymore.

[–] starik@lemmy.today 9 points 1 week ago

Because this community knows they can’t argue their positions on the merits.

This is a pretty shitty and convoluted analogy not gonna lie.

Poster is a mod of this community and has apparently been deleting comments willy-nilly.

If that's the case, you're a shitty mod not worthy of talking about late stage capitalism and perhaps your community is shit as a result of your actions and insecurity.

If it's not true, I apologize for all that lol

One Choice: Near instant death drowning

Other Choice: Live but it takes too long to get where you want to be.

Ah yes voting is when something completely irrelevant...

except the second guy tells you he will save you incrementally, but you know he’s lying and is sitting on the car as it slowly sinks in. the first guy is the reason you in this mess in the first place.

don’t go with either of them

[–] darthelmet@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

This is how I feel when it comes to climate change especially. The other issues are important, but the difference between getting M4A now and later is the people it can't help now. That's still important, but with climate change we're hurtling towards a disaster we won't be able to pull back from if we keep waiting. Every time we get a Dem where the best they can do is maybe undo some of the damage the Reps caused I just feel such despair.

[–] offspec@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

My comment was removed by the moderators, so I'll say the shorter version. VOTE. Do not let memes on the internet make you feel like your vote doesn't matter or that voting is useless, vote vote vote. We desperately need ranked choice voting, but even so, just vote.

[–] ThatGuy46475@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

In this context “not voting because it doesn’t matter” would be sitting in the car until you drown

[–] Daft_ish@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago

Now your car is the geographical size of the United States. Its sinking like 1 inch per year. Everyone else in the car is a douche bag.

They murder anyone who says that the car can be saved if we just stop letting it sink.

[–] Equinox1289@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

We need stakeholder focus. Unless you're actually worried about workers, consumers, and those environmentally impacted by the impacts of our economic system, I don't care about what any politician has to say. - me, a stakeholder socialist.
