The SSD on my parents 10 year old PC died and they were able to get an upgrade through dad's work. They offered me the old machine.

16GB of DDR4. I hit the goddamn jackpot.

My stockpile of EDO will finally be worth something!

Oh I thought they were talking about ddr3, maybe even ddr2. They're talking about ddr4? Homie I game on ddr4, it's perfectly fine

I mean most gaming you can do on ddr3, but when I play I play online competitive (csgo) so it matters slightly more. Most people will be fine with ddr3

Yeah man let's please start posting on our own with sources and facts that aren't shit online sources out to make a buck with stupid headlines and old news.

Come on people...

If you're young: Let's start having fun with tech!

If you're old: Let's start having fun with tech again!

Tinkering and learning skills like soldering and reviving so called 'e-waste' is pretty fun and rewarding.

Old tech is fascinating to learn about and you can choose any era you want!

Going backwards means going forwards!

I mean, for most people, we hit the level of "does more than you could ever want" in the DDR2 era. For the average Instagram normie, what do they need from a Windows 11 PC that a Windows 7 machine couldn't do?

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

So Linux Mint it is then? (Very "XP/Seven" like system IMO).

Kids always get the best gear (the shoemaker gets the worst shoes eh) so I was quite astonished that an old 6500T + 32GB (DDR4) is doing absolutely everything I need. It's been my daily workhorse since at least 2 years.

It is amazing to me how often I'll be presented with some old PC, some Optiplex or Ideapad or some other corporate/consumer sludge box that handles Windows 10 or 11 the way the human digestive system handles wet concrete, put Linux Mint on it and now it feels like my $2000 gaming PC until you really load it.

Well there’s certainly no improvements in the user experience, but they need more RAM to run all the user analytics and data harvesting

Decade-old RAM | DDR4 has returned.

Wait... no...

sudo lshw -class memory

*-bank:0 description: DIMM DDR3 1866 MHz (0.5 ns)

NOOOOOOOO!!!

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 60 points 1 day ago (1 children)

DDR4 may be a decade old, but DDR5 is half a decade old.

[–] brem@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

Laughs in piles of 16 gig DDR3...

"...but there are so many of us!!!!"

Spirit bombs DDR4 to oblivion

[–] ArsonButCute@programming.dev 8 points 1 day ago

Oh God I need to buy my ddr2 before you all start swarming for the new old stock.

[–] LammyToGo32@lemmy.zip 14 points 1 day ago

My newest Proxmox node in my homelab is a ThinkPad T540p, 4th Gen i5 😂🫣 DDR3 is not dead yet, and to be fair with the f-ed up pricing, it makes even more sense

[–] Sawblade02@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago

Comeback nothing, I stacked everything with DDR4 when 5 stated getting popular because it was so crazy cheap.

[–] brem@lemmy.world 32 points 1 day ago

If these dusty shelves had the motivation to sell all of my DDR3....

...but then again...why shouldn't we keeps it!?!?

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Their solution? A return to last-gen DDR4 RAM

I mean, DDR3 was still good enough in 2020...

[–] Jacob_Mandarin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The number of elecron apps and other ram hogs i am coming across says otherwise.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Companies shifting their dev costs to your hardware costs. This will not work long-term.

[–] nik282000@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Once AI pops companies will shift compute back to their end because a) they have to find some way to use all that hardware, and b) end users are being starved of hardware. Desktop as a service extended to every device you use! Phone, laptop, TV, car, all of it will all have it's brain in the cloud.

[–] j5y7@sh.itjust.works 1 points 23 hours ago

AI won't pop. Politicians are cheap compared to data centers. The governments are just going to print more money to pay for this shit. At least that's what the cynic in me thinks.

I'm glad I upgraded from 32 GB to 64 GB in like 2022. I was annoyed at the time because the price per-gig had already doubled since I built the computer in late 2020. (And video cards were already more expensive than when I'd browsed in early 2020.)

Here's the dumbest part, possibly beating any chicanery about neural networks - it's because I ran two browsers. I was doing web dev with both Firefox and Chromium, and still routinely thrashing. Linux Mint's cache behavior was the third stooge trying to fit through that doorway shoulder-to-shoulder, and suddenly thirty-two entire gigabytes was not enough memory to browse reddit in the orange window with video streaming in the blue window.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 16 hours ago

At first I was like he must be on windows, but that's a quite specific use case you have there :-) !

[–] mrfriki@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Time for decade old games to make a comeback then.

[–] ExtremeDullard@piefed.social 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They never went away. Older games either. That's because they don't depend on online servers going dark.

Excuse me while I return to my Quake deathmatch.

[–] sounddrill@programming.dev 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] ExtremeDullard@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

Thank you for this! I was totally unaware of that game and I will check it out asap!

[–] assembly@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Good to know I can at least upgrade my motherboard and processor without having to buy new memory. I ain’t giving up my 32gb.

[–] brackled@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

Vote with your wallet. Don't buy the new/refreshed CPUs and absolutely don't use any AI products. Address the rrot cause not the symptom.

[–] dusk@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I only built my am4 system at the end of 2022, it's new, not old :P

The way things are going it may end up with some of my sodimm in it by 2030

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Jokes on you, I just bought parts for a new AM4 system yesterday. :) Though, to be fair, it's just the CPU and motherboard. Using old memory.

[–] dusk@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)
  • 5700x cpu $339aud (on sale from $489), now $310 on sale
  • x570s gigabyte aorus master mobo $411aud (on sale from $522), now rare as hens teeth, on newegg for $700, on ebay for $900+
  • ram 2x16 3200 $152aud, now 3 castles, both legs, and a pristine fully sealed snes.

mobo was a weird buy anyway though, but does make me wonder what the options and prices are like now for am4 systems. Maybe they will start releasing new boards, or rerelease old ones...

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You paid more for your motherboard than your CPU? Why?

[–] dusk@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Multiple reasons at the time, most of which I don't remember, one of them was wanting higher speed usb-c which wasn't available on a lot of other boards, in hindsight it would have been better, and cheaper to get a pci-e to usb-c card. The board also has the error code read out, a thunderbolt add in card connector, WiFi 6E, 4 x m.2s.

There was/is also the potential to replace the cpu with an x3d. Although the 5700x was a very deliberate choice and I am happy with it. I was never planning on moving to am5.

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Fair enough. That said: I built an AM5 system at pretty much the exact same time as you did and IIRC, I ended up paying less for a more powerful CPU and newer platform.

[–] dusk@piefed.social 1 points 2 hours ago

Get back to me when you need to replace your ram :P

One of the reasons I went with AM4 was platform maturity, at the time AM5 was new (launched sept 2022).

My prices are in aud btw (if you didn't notice).

Bigger number better is also not how I do things, and it isn't the direction that tech should have moved.

My choices of a 5700x and a 6800 (non xt) were very deliberate due to performance/efficiency. I could have easily gone to a x3d and a higher end graphics card.

I have no regrets about what I chose, aside from I should have just gone with a b series board, and maybe a different case, I wanted a non glass case that could hold at least 3 hdd's, and (at least in Australia) that was more difficult than it should have been, due ot silly people and their silly lights = glass sided cases being the norm. I ended up with a Be Quiet Silent Base 802, which is okay, but could be better, and could be smaller (I should have originally bought 2x 8,10, 02 12Tb hdd's, instead of 3x 6Tb)
