I'm straight, been married 32 years, and my wife hates astrology. There's no dilemma.

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 5 points 1 hour ago

She single, by any chance?

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 3 points 53 minutes ago

I'll choose making fun of astrology.

If they can predict planetary motions based on a sample of life events from a group of individuals with a balanced distribution of zodiac signs, then I will be convinced it is real.

I had several friends at school with the same birthday as me, so obviously we had the same personality and all the same stuff kept happening to us.

sounds like a good plot for a movie

Imagine you had to date a pool of people who tend to systematically deny the validity of your experiences or perspective. You have a way of referring to your experiences in a way that

  • is easy to ridicule
  • provides a layer of isolation between what you present as yourself and being personally ridiculed
  • is trivial to understand with the slightest bit of reason/empathy

Would you latch on to it as a way of filtering out dates?

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 9 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

I don't have to imagine that. I experience it.

In my case it's not astrology though, it's growing up poor. And the folks I meet who didn't grow up that way systematically deny my experiences and perspective as ignorant and stupid (or mentally ill), because poor people are ignorant and stupid in their eyes and they can't ever be anything other than that.

I think my favorite reaction is when I get lectured about how my parents should have never have had me. That's always a trip. Like I'm suppose to go back in time and stop my parents from fucking, to appease some stranger I just met? Shit's wild.

Theres a not so secret third option, don't date folks that believe in such nonsense.

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 10 points 4 hours ago (13 children)

Nobody said anything about dating

I used to be a bit of a dick about astrology. I still think it's nonsense, but now I kinda view it as a structure for people to explore their own emotions and as a kind of authority struct to get people to treat those emotions as valid. Ultimately I feel like its no different than me sharing emo song lyrics with an "omg they understand me frfr" type message. Maybe the astrology believer isn't upset because Venus is in retrograde or whatever, but they are upset their emotions are valid. I don't gain anything from being a wet blanket about scientific accuracy in that situation, and they feel like I am invalidating their emotions if I choose to be that scientifically accurate wet blanket. Plus, retrograde is a dope word and I'm not sure if I'd know it if not for the crystal girls I've dated
