What the hell lol, 3GB of RAM and 16GB of storage has not increased in price by $100

They basically have no competition. The Shield just works, and is constantly updated.

This is Nvidia we're talking about. That doesn't matter. All that matters is number go up. And I hate to see it. I've got two Nvidia Shields. One of them has been running daily since 2015. And I still have no need to replace it at this point. But I really can't recommend it to anyone else pick one up. In fact, right now I'm looking at setting up a Linux TV PC do many of the same things. Since I can literally pick up $100 E-Waste business PC that would be more capable. The only issue would be a few specific apps. Which with the right bits and pieces may be achievable through waydroid or similar

Typical linux experience. Cheap and great if you don't actually use it.

It has some issues. But I use it and it actually is cheap and great. But it might vary for others. If you are a heavy user of proprietary things. Nothing is one size fits all.

Bafflingly (or not because it's a DRM created issue) the Nvidia Shield is still the most "open" way to watch 4k netflix for anyone that cares about that. I think the highest resolution you can get on Linux or uncertified android devices is 1080p and even that requires jumping through some hoops unless something has changed recently.

Of course for those inclined, it's easily solved by cancelling netflix, acquiring your own copies of media (legitimately or not) and running a media server

Wide Vine is a breeze to install on Arch. I haven't tried under fedora. But I know that it's been significantly more difficult under other distributions. But yes 1080p Max I believe. Not that generally any of my subscriptions cover 4K shit I pirate all that.

Sad thing is, streaming services have shit bitrates, so the 4k aint worth it.

When was the last update to the Shield, 2019? Crazy they think it will sell for $100 more 7 years later.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Software is updated constantly. Hardware works fine to 4K, so why "upgrade"?

[–] x_pikl_x@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (4 children)

Just had an update a couple months ago actually. Believe it holds all sorts of awards for being to longest running Android product to still receive updates. They usually break shit to fix something else, but what a strange thing to complain about when referring to the shield.

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'm talking about a hardware update not the firmware.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why does it need a hardware update.

Because the software demands get greater with each passing year. It's the same reason why your cellphone doesn't come with 2GB of RAM like they did back in 2015. I'm not saying they need a yearly refresh cycle or anything, but jacking up the price $100 when the hardware is quite dated at this point is ridiculous. Build a new one and then raise the price of that $100 from the previous generation.

[–] jaschen306@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 days ago

I still use this thing daily. I installed moonlight and play my PC game on it too. It's great.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago

Yes but it wasn't with its price nowadays itnis definetly not with 100 dollars more. Vying it now you get less support.

Is it a firewall? What does it shield you from?

[–] imetators@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Or shields you from buying your physical games and your media and let's you only rent them.
