Awesome concept but shit execution;

A community to talk about the Fediverse and all it's related services using ActivityPub (Mastodon, Lemmy, Mbin, etc).
If you wanted to get help with moderating your own community then head over to !moderators@lemmy.world!

Awesome concept but shit execution;

You own your identity.
Your handle, your posts, your followers. Outgrow a server? Move and take everyone with you. No lock-in, no starting over.
Patently not true, every server you sign up for is a different account and if you move servers you make an entirely new account there that cannot edit any of your posts, comments, or DMs; there is no method of transfer outside of some external tools that allow you to move your follow lists, which typically need to be the same service (can’t move your Lemmy communities to Mastodon follows last I looked).
Also anyone following you does not automatically follow your new identity.
TBH this is something that ActivityPub was not designed for, but it should be.
Here is some feed back from my friend who is a social media user. I asked him if he found this appealing he said no because he wants less social media.
I think the landlord part is a huge slopulism redflag. landlords have nothing to do with a social media platform bringing up that there is 0 here is dumb
I think there should be a sell that isnt negative. The fediverse isnt good because its less shitty. Its good because its actually cool in a lot of unique ways. Those unique ways are hard to sell easily but in my opinion the sell should be something positively cool about the fediverse. Personally I like the instance concept I think its what makes this place so great. To my friends I just say its a shared feed not controlled by any one entitiy.
I don’t really feel like the landlord part is true on principle, either? Isn’t the landlord technically the person who runs the server you use? Granted, they’re not managing billions of accounts like Meta and the like, but it doesn’t strike me as an accurate analogy
I like the concept here, but it doesn’t address the big gotcha that I found out when I setup my own lemmy instance is that you can’t federate to all the different instances that support activitypub. I can’t use my lemmy account to post on mastadon or loops.video or pixelfed, or etc. you still need separate accounts on each instance. Maybe someday they will all talk to each other but at the moment it is certainly mildly annoying.
That's because Mastodon, PixelFed, Lemmy etc etc are different services based on ActivityPub, they aren't instances of the same thing; what you want is a software that can communicate with Mastodon, PixelFed and Lemmy
TL;DR: the softwares themselves have to be made in a way to be compatible with eachothers, eg: Lemmy and PieFed works with eachother or you can also use Mastodon to interact with Lemmy (but not viceversa IIRC) too
Server browser doesnt seem to have all servers. Programming.dev is missing.
Do you see more than just lemmy.world and piefed.social?
Nope, but didnt look terribly hard either. Just searched "programming"
Ah okay, I wasn't sure if I was looking in the wrong area. So yeah it seems they only have just those two instances listed
it looks to have 10 servers, which is hardly enough to be a useful resource.
I love that the icon for the fediverse is a collection of assholes.
Thanks, I hate it 😂
Two recommendations would be to use "overlords" instead of "landlords" I think former is a better catchall than the latter.
Second recommendation, on the "Find an App" page it should auto-scroll to the list below when you select one of the large pills. Or alternatively, do away with the big selection pills altogether. No reason to have two filtering methods that accomplish the same thing on the same page.
Succinct and punchy, melikes
not for nothing but wordpress is not fediverse. it’s corporate horseshit. (under the section re blogging long form)
also note: there are absolutely legal risks running your own instance of anything and choosing to federate content with other instances.
Wordpress has a well working ActivityPub extensions that is developed with official funding by Automattic. You can interact with Mastodon quite well via these extensions.
But yes, Wordpress is kinda shit otherwise.
How is this site better than FediDB?
