I haven't played the 2nd but I remember the first feeling like eight separate short stories that just so happened to include party mechanics and level grinding.

"I only work alone."

"Join up with this group of 7 random people?"

"Okay!"

Did you finish the first one? I played through all the characters through either chapter 1 or 2 (can't remember now) and it immediately turned into a grindfest where I couldn't progress because everything was suddenly killing me.

Did I miss something or was it specifically designed to be a "grind to progress" type of game?

Nope. That's pretty much all I remember and my same experience.

OK good, I don't have to feel too bad about dropping it then. The story was ok enough (ish) and they made enough changes to the combat system to make it feel innovative at first, but I'm not sure who they thought was clamoring for a 90s style padded grind experience in 2018. I guess it got favorable reviews and sold well enough so maybe I'm the crazy one but I thought the time of farming random encounters to triple the length of your game was a thing of the past.

The innovation they used to address that was mostly the unique interactions each (half) the characters had. The steal/barter, inspect, duel, etc. That got access to a lot of things that either shortened grinds or made grinding easier.

But for me it just wasn't worth the grind anyway when the characters didn't really interact.

¡That's the best part! (8 times :p)

Was thinking the same thing. Been looking for some stuff to load on the Deck for downtime at work. Never got around to these before.

I was excited for the first one, played about 65% of it & it became a chore so I quit. Never played the second, figured it was more of the same.

Second this. What broke it for me was the amount of absolutely pointless fights while traveling. And you travel a lot, as the name suggests.

I get trying to make an old school, grindy RPG, but it just fell flat.

Grimstone from UFO 50 is the game I point to for how to do a retro RPG well. Hell, all of UFO 50 is fantastic, I home there's a sequel.

It's not really my kind of gameplay but i got it for the visuals alone and the game does look really good. I love the 3D cardboard world artstyle.

thanks gog for preserving this retro gem 😅

I'm kind of confused, both games currently support the current platform and were not broken. Is it typical for them to add games to the preservation program like this? I thought it was for games that no longer work on modern systems, or idk preservation. It's a good thing to be sure, but my reaction is just "what?".
