I posted this comment on the same meme in a different comm, but it's worth saying again:

I'm a big proponent of "showing your weird" -- I've always liked weird people because they don't appear to be hiding anything, they just have a genuine quality normal people don't, whereas people who seem "perfect" or "normal" (whatever that means) are often too good to be true, and are fucked up in a way they have to hide.

I've had success showing my weird; it weeds out those who would not want me, and that prevents wasted time and energy on something that'd never work.

All this being said, if I were on a date with a person and they started doing this, well, I'd be extremely interested.

I would like to hear this 27 minute lecture on sea monster map placement.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 41 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Can I get a longer version? Maybe with drawing classes, because those maps were awesome!

This thread is completely devoid of map sea monster facts and that’s a travesty

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

did you know that sea monsters are afraid of light?

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Don't listen to this, this is lies spread by sea monsters to make us put lights on our boats, making them easier to spot

Sometimes, the map monsters are green.

No no no. You need to start by explaining the evolution of mapmaking, before focusing on the monsters.
Non-map people don't have enough background on maps, so you must provide that first.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That must have been the problem. I feel like it's the same problem I had, not describing the backstory to middle earth fully to my date as I told her of the third age...

This is top tier flirting and I should be so lucky to have it directed my way. Luna can get it.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You'd think she was just being friendly and completely miss the signal.

[–] nightofmichelinstars@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Probably. But I'd appreciate it when I realized 20 years later. Well first I'd facepalm a bunch, then appreciate.

[–] Banana@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Honestly this is why I started just telling people when I'm crushing on them.

The worst thing that has ever happened as a result was that they were flattered but did not return the feelings. And honestly? Knowing that helped me move on and stay friends with those people.

I am very much a flirt by nature and this just takes out all the guesswork hahaha. Now, TO BE FAIR, I am a woman and very, uh, let's just say i get called "cute" and "adorable" a lot, I don't wanna toot my own horn too much here, but my point is that I am non-threatening. This tactic may not be taken as well coming from a man, but I think it also heavily depends on existing rapport (or lack thereof) with the person of interest.

I have a hard time reading "phobia for eggs." I feel like it should be phobia of eggs. Or egg phobia.

Unironically if I went on a date with someone and they infodumped for 30 minutes about sea monsters on old maps I think I'd fall in love lmao.

If she doesn't want to hear your dissertation on sea monsters then she's not the one.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 37 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Agreed. Not because she's as fascinated by it, although that would be a plus. But she should be enjoying the time with you, seeing what makes you excited. If that doesn't attract her, move on.

Be sure to do the same for her interests also. You don't have to be captivated by her hobbies or knowledge of something, but you should like watching her explain it to you.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 26 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Plus, it just sounds interesting. Who wouldn't be interested by that? I'm always baffled by people who don't like to learn random shit.

[–] pidgey@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

Agree completely- I adore people who are excited about anything and tell me about it with enthusiasm!

That said - it needs to be mutual. Awesome for you to lecture me on your passions - but it’s not a fun relationship for me if you aren’t also eager to hear about the things I want to share.

[–] Dadifer@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Unironically. When you find the one, they will love you because of this, not in spite of

[–] scrodumb@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 days ago

Every once in a while I'll say something completely incorrect so she talks science to me.

She was probably turned off by the fact that they aren't maps, but rather nautical charts. :(

[–] Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 43 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I never wondered why the map sea monsters were placed in the locations that they were placed in.

I am now wondering why the map sea monsters were placed in the locations that they were placed in.

Always thought it was “because there’s room there and it looks neat.”

one interesting reason is drew monsters where they didn't want people to go like their fishing spots

(the monsters were an indication that the sea was dangerous there)

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Frankly I never questioned why there be monsters as marked.

[–] PostProcess@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago

This. They're marked there cos that's where they fricken' are!

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Well, yeah, duh. That's what chronological order is.

[–] AliOski@feddit.nl 4 points 2 days ago

I now don't know whether they are genuinely simping or being witty.

[–] Jubei_K_08@lemmy.world 39 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I mean, 27 minutes barely seems enough for a proper introduction to such a vast subject.

She got lucky, clearly her date was actually a sea monster disguised as a human, a clear attempt as using lonely humans as a slightly more ethical food source rather than sailors who might have family at home waiting for their return.

[–] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 21 points 3 days ago (3 children)

She should have clued in when her date kept asking for tree fitty.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Try dating other autists, normies don't uh, speak your love language.

Somebody called me?

[–] tigermountain@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

Monologues are not allowed to exceed 5 minutes on a date.

[–] wittymcusername@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

Maybe a sea monster ate her ice cream.

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)
