Witches were post-menopausal women without men in their lives, for whatever reason. Thus useless with no perceived place in a patriarchal world.
There’s also a strong hx of docs being upset with midwifery types infringing on their space. This challenged patriarchy.
Generally independent and knowledgeable women, well fuck. We can’t have that. They must be a witch which will justify us getting rid of them.
A widow might also have property, if there was no son or other male to inherit it. If she were hanged for witchcraft or died during the ~~tortue~~trials, (or in a different era if she were permanently institutionalized for hysteria) her property would be forfeit.
There’s a book out there called Devil in the Shape of a Woman that gets into it. Side text we read in a history class because the main history texts didn’t really cover it at that time.
And counteract the curse of building our entire nation on top of one massive native American burial ground? I kinda doubt it.

The (many, many) witch burnings in history highlight sociological problems that still exist today, and given we've collectively slow-walked addressing them, reactionary movements are back in force, and pose a catastrophic existential risk.
It may just be human nature: We are very resistant to letting go of power even when not doing so is dangerous. And before we let go of harmful customs and traditions, we have to suffer a lot of harm.
