Recite the Ode after me:
Orange-stripe Orange, Green-Stripe Blue,
Blue-Stripe Green, Brown-Stripe Brown

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 20 points 2 weeks ago (17 children)

Also: my life improved immensely when I decided to spend 12 quid to buy this:

I literally sploosh every time I use it. Doesn't matter what the wire, length, thickness, or girth. They crimp all the same

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 10 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Mine, hold your excitement, mine crimps from six sides at once!!! SIX!!

Are we sure Lemmy doesn't have an algorithm? This is the second comment dropping the Golden Crimping Code i see in like 5 minutes

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 6 points 2 weeks ago

Lemmy Code: Shun capitalism and push crimping products. You will comply.

[–] abcdqfr@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Guy I used to work with would intentionally break off the latch on every cable he touched, rendering this question moot.

[–] filcuk@feddit.uk 25 points 2 weeks ago

I assume he has since disappeared under mysterious circumstances, at the same time as all of his coworkers were somewhere else on a walk together (or so they swear)

Literally never found myself wanting one of these on my cable. I've found myself swearing at them more times than I can remember

[–] shiftymccool@piefed.ca 16 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

You've apparently never pulled hundreds of feet of ethernet cable from racks or under raised datacenter floors. Without these, you're replacing that connector once it pops loose from the tangle without a tab

[–] glitch1985@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Who's pulling hundreds of feet of already terminated cable?

[–] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

People who work on highrises. Ownership and management really have no concept of what they are asking when they say the server room needs to go from one side of the building to another, especially if there is satellite internet. Fuck satellite internet.

Reboots some switches

How are you rebooting a switch with a connector?

[–] kensand@sopuli.xyz 84 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Some dumber manufacturers put the reset button right above a port, such that the clip cover can bump it on insertion.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 10 points 2 weeks ago

Hey! You made me click a Cisco URL! My phone is provably infected now!

[–] denial@feddit.org 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

In some cases it presses the button that is right above the eathernet slots

I always circumcise my RJ45 connectors before plugging them in.

[–] TownhouseGloryHole@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

Great, now I'm going to call these RJ45 foreskins.

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 28 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

I'm a no boot man, causes more issues then they solve.

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

yeah same. I can count on one hand the number of times I've ripped lock tabs off, meanwhile the number of times the stiff protective boot makes it impossible to unclip when it is cold or more than 5yo is easily in the thousands.

Also reterminating a plug with a broken lock tab takes like 5 minutes to cut and crimp.. Or be a real chad and throw a strip of duct tape to hold it in and say fuckit.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 7 points 2 weeks ago

Used to run LAN parties. We had a big bag of ethernet cables we inherited from the people who ran it before us, and like 50% of them had no tab. Eventually we chucked them out.

There’s a secret third option I didn’t include

One on the right, when asked about "some switches":

The one on the right, every day. The one on the left is a pain in the ass to disconnect.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 20 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

* poorly designed switches

[–] Itdidnttrickledown@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The one on the left gets the utility knife circumcision.

I’m a “push buttons” computer nerd, not a “series of tubes” computer nerd

Why does this thing exist? What’s it for? Please treat me like one of the chimps from 2001 discovering the monolith, because that’s what the network is to me.

Also left one can fuck right off. Nobody tells me what I can’t unplug.

[–] SolacefromSilence@fedia.io 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

We're running that cable direct into the case and soldering the connectors, just for you. We'll decide when you can disconnect.

VGA port: "I'm tired, boss"

[–] Janx@piefed.social 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Cable's like

[–] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 2 weeks ago

I mean that's why VGA connectors have screws, right?

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago

and this is why NEC requires clamps on wires housed in boxes through walls.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

It’s there so the little plastic tab that keeps the Ethernet cable plugged in doesn’t break easily.

Because honestly, those little plastic tabs are a shit design for keeping something important plugged in.

Gotta love how "memes" is just computing memes and we are all fine with it anyway.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

Neither. I choose neither.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 weeks ago

Choose B and better switches

If you can't so that, choose B and use scissors to shorten the guard a hair

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Neither, cable boots are a pain in the ass no matter the design.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 6 points 2 weeks ago

Broken tab on the cable, using tape to keep it in the port.
