Fuck the icosphere, all my homies use the UV sphere! /j I love both for different reasons

[–] coolie4@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

That's a nice unwrap

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

How does the right net make a sphere

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

You gotta manipulate the sizes of the little squares before. Otherwise it turns into a cylinder with pointy ends like I'm betting you imagine. 😊

[–] blackbelt352@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

So thats the thing ablut UV unwrapping the UV Sphere, because the lengths of the edges are allowed to be distorted, what should be closer to trapezoids making a bunch of slightly rounded slices can be distorted slightly to squares/rectangles without real significant distortion when applied to the object with the exception of the triangle fan at the very top and bottom.

If we were unwrapping this to completely minimize distortion at top priority, a UV sphere would look closer to the Polyconic Map Projection.

Rectangles are just 2 triangles if u think about it

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

But how can we see if our eyes aren't real?

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 24 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Fun fact: The first Nvidia chip, the NV1, used quadrilaterals for primitives rather than triangles because it was based on and somewhat compatible with the Sega Saturn. However around the same time MS announced that DirectX would exclusively support triangle primitives and the rest was history.

[–] HereIAm@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Today I learned quads was ever used and not something 3D modelers smoked up.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 14 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Triangle, its just the second best to the Hexagon.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 43 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

A hexagon is just six triangles in a trench coat. So triangles are ultimately better.

Fight me CPG Grey

[–] listless@lemmy.cringecollective.io 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You misunderstand CPG Grey.

Triangles are the best angles.

Hexagons are the best agons.

Hexagons are the bestigons

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Doing the things a triangle can.

[–] deegeese@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago

What’s he like?

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Good news everyone! I can see several hexagons in this image.

And if you zoom really far in it's kinda circles again

[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

... fuck you're right.

[–] freijon@lemmy.zip 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

but if you zoom enough you'll realize its actually squares. always has been.

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Enhance.

The squares are made of circles, which are arranged in triangles.

[–] eronth@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Aren't modern screens rectangle LEDs?

[–] mirshafie@europe.pub 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Aren't diodes literally triangles though?

[–] eronth@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

The icon in schematics is, but I'm not seeing anything that indicates a physical diode is. Got a source?

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Clearly not rendered on a Sega Saturn.

[–] MrShankles@reddthat.com 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't get it, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Send help though

[–] amda@feddit.nl 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

This is a popular meme template about finding y in a x factory, the original being about a cricle in a triangle factory.

The joke here is that computers usually render all 3D shapes from a bunch of triangle, so of course the sphere (which I guess only looks like a circle) is ~~of course~~ made of triangle because everything is.

[–] MrShankles@reddthat.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

TIL, thank you! That explains older graphics, like Laura Croft and their edgy-polygon shapes

[–] Rubisco@slrpnk.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

It's so beautiful! Love this version.
